The role

What will you do?

Are you a nurse and do you want to develop into an ICU nurse, but you have little clinical experience yet? Then this traineeship offers you the opportunity to build a solid foundation. You will gain practical experience within the nursing departments of Maastricht UMC+ and will receive intensive guidance in your professional development. The goal is that after this trajectory, you can successfully start the ICU training and eventually work as an ICU nurse within Maastricht UMC+.

Because every nurse has a different background and development need, the traineeship is tailored to the individual. The duration of the program is 6 or 12 months and is aligned with your knowledge, experience, and learning needs. During the interview, we will discuss together which developmental steps are necessary to optimally prepare you for the ICU training. We also regularly evaluate your progress during the traineeship and adjust the program where necessary. This ensures that you build the experience, skills, and confidence to successfully transition to the training and position of ICU nurse within Maastricht UMC+. Specific goals you will work on during the traineeship are:

  • Gaining experience as a (recent graduate) nurse;

  • Increasing independence and responsibility on the work floor;

  • Acting in unexpected, acute situations;

  • Acquiring knowledge and working towards the desired level to start the ICU training.

What does your traineeship look like?

Maastricht UMC+ has 3 ICU units: two general units and one focused on cardiothoracic surgery (CTC). During the traineeship, you will gain experience within the ICU and two nursing departments. Working a minimum of 32 hours per week is a requirement for the traineeship.

In addition to the duration of the traineeship, your work experience will also be considered during the interview. During the traineeship, you will in any case work in a nursing department with a surgical and consultative specialty. Which departments these will be depends on your work experience and where you can achieve the most learning yield.

During the traineeship, you will be supervised by the clinical instructors of the ICU/CCU. Together with you, the team leader of the nursing department, and the clinical instructors, progress is regularly evaluated and the trajectory is adjusted where necessary.
In the months that you work in the ICU, you will be in the same ICU unit. Assessments are conducted to map your knowledge and determine where you can still improve. In the final month, we will determine together with you whether you have sufficient background to be able to start the ICU training.

The total training trajectory (a maximum 12-month traineeship followed by the ICU training) spans an average of 2.5 to 3 years. The ICU training consists of three training parts: Basic Acute Care (BAZ), core part, and specific part. You will rotate to a different ICU unit per training part.

What do we ask of you?

You are a motivated and eager-to-learn nurse who wants to develop into an ICU nurse. You take initiative in your own development, are open to feedback, and enjoy working together with colleagues. As a trainee, you know your own limits, ask for support in a timely manner, and actively utilize opportunities to learn and grow.

  • BIG registration in the Netherlands with an mbo or hbo nursing diploma.

  • Are you in possession of a Belgian nursing diploma? Even then, we would love to get in contact with you. We are currently not processing candidates with the Graduaat Basisverpleegkundige education.

  • Driven to work in acute care;

  • You have some clinical experience, for example through clinical internships during your studies. You need that experience to have a good chance of success in reaching your end goal: working as an ICU nurse;

  • Enthusiastic and eager to learn;

  • Strong communication skills;

  • Available at least 32 hours per week;

  • Available for irregular shifts (evening, night, and weekend shifts and holidays).

To successfully start in this role, it is important that you have a good command of the Dutch language (minimum C1 level) due to contact with, among others, patients and colleagues. Additionally, it is a condition that you are permitted to work in the Netherlands (EU/EEA nationality or a valid work permit).

Salary

Depending on education and experience, the salary is at least € 3,171 and at most € 4,492 gross per month for a full-time position, in accordance with scale 7M of the Cao umc.
