Requirements

What we're looking for

  • A BIG registration as a nurse.

  • At least 6 months of recent, relevant work experience as a nurse or anesthesia technician in a hospital. Do you not have this yet? Then first gain experience on our nursing ward and then come to the ICU!

Pay & benefits

What you'll get

  • A work-study agreement for the duration of the training for 28-36 hours per week, with a view to a permanent contract;

  • A gross monthly salary between € 3,463 and € 4,914 (in accordance with CAO as of 1/8/2026) based on a 36-hour work week, corresponding to FWG 50 and depending on your experience. After completing your training, you will start in FWG 55;

  • 144 vacation hours and 57 hours of Personal Life Stage Budget, based on full-time employment;

  • An annual 8.33% holiday allowance and a fixed year-end bonus of 8.33%;

  • A travel allowance of € 0.23 per km;

  • Free parking at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, but with our bicycle scheme and discounts on public transport, we also make it attractive for you to leave the car behind;

  • A great opportunity in a specialized hospital where you can also continue to learn and grow if you wish: the AVL Academy offers innovative and inspiring education in the field of oncological expertise, skills, and personal development;

  • Opportunities to exercise at our Fit Boutiqs;

  • An active staff association and Young AVL: associations that organize sporting, cultural, and creative activities and events;

  • An employer contribution of 50% towards your pension at Pensioenfonds Zorg & Welzijn and collective discounts with health insurers IZZ, Zorg en Zekerheid, and Zilveren Kruis.

The role

Do you want to specialize as an ICU nurse and make an immediate impact? Follow the training and make a difference for cancer patients in the intensive care unit of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek. With our excellent guidance, you will grow step by step in your role, so that you can eventually provide highly complex care and fill a permanent position in our close-knit team!

As soon as you successfully complete your training after 1.5 years, you are guaranteed a permanent job. For the first 4 months, you will attend lessons one week per month at the Amstel Academie. After that, the frequency of the theory lessons will decrease and you will work more on the ward. At the end of your training, you will also complete an internship for a number of weeks in the ICU of the Amsterdam UMC, so that you also gain experience in highly complex ICU care outside of oncology.

What you'll do

  • You provide intensive care to oncological patients who come to us after undergoing - often technically highly complex - surgery. This means that our patients are usually awake and stay in our ICU for a relatively short period on average.

  • You work in our unique medical center, where we do not have emergencies. Patients who become unstable at home come to us acutely in the ICU.

  • You support patients and their loved ones during the difficult and uncertain period in the ICU. With us, you get the time to support them emotionally and ensure that they feel heard and seen.

  • For the first 9 months, you will be scheduled as surplus staff. In fact: you can schedule yourself. Based on the shifts of your supervisors, you choose for yourself when you work.

  • You receive excellent guidance, in which we take your learning style into account and move with your learning curve.

The training starts in April and October. Before you start, you will first shadow our ward for 1 month. This way, you get to know our intensive care unit and start your training well-prepared.

This is where you will work:

Welcome to our ICU! We, about 30 nurses, would love to welcome you. How do we experience our workplace? As a medical center with an enormous impact - groundbreaking cancer research is conducted here and technically highly complex care is provided - and a convivial atmosphere like in a small hospital. We are a close-knit group with loyal colleagues. Even though we deal daily with patients being treated for severe illness, there is also room for lightheartedness with us. During breaks, and for example during our team outings.
