The role

What will you do?

As a nurse within the pulmonary department:

  • You are responsible for the total nursing care from admission to discharge for the (pulmonary) patients assigned to you.

  • You work in a multidisciplinary team, for a patient population with various diverse clinical pictures.

  • You independently perform all occurring nursing-technical procedures and coordinate the care for the patient.

  • You supervise the student nurses and interns present.

  • In addition, psychosocial guidance of patients and family is an important aspect of your work. You must be able to empathize well with the patient and their disease process.

  • To be able to offer every patient the best possible care, your creativity and flexibility are regularly called upon.

  • You are co-responsible for both your own learning and working climate as well as for others; collaborating in this is the message.

  • Personal initiative to improve quality is highly appreciated; these are shared and secured in working groups and department meetings in which you participate as a nurse.

If you would like to hear from a colleague how we work on our ward, then quickly watch the video below:

Within the pulmonary specialty, a very broad patient population is admitted, including for example patients with COPD, sarcoidosis, Cystic Fibrosis, pulmonary embolisms, lung carcinomas.
Respiratory diseases belong to one of the profile areas chosen within the strategy of Maastricht UMC+ (Healthy Living).

On nursing ward A3, a maximum of 30 patients with a diversity of pulmonary issues reside.
Within this dynamic environment, our team provides high-quality care to the pulmonary patient. This care delivery consists of a great diversity of specific nursing-technical procedures. For example, oxygen is administered via high flow therapy, patients are set up on home ventilation equipment, oncological therapies are provided, and postoperative care is given. Additionally, palliative care is developed to a high level, whereby the patient and their loved ones are offered careful guidance.
As caregivers, we act based on the principles of Advance Care planning. We enter into dialogue with patients and their loved ones to formulate meaningful and achievable goals for current and future care and treatment and to translate them into the best possible care.

Due to the increasing diversity in care demand, the department continues to develop regarding the care to be provided. This includes the continuous striving towards an efficient organization of the work processes in relation to the care offered to our pulmonary patient. The design of care pathways is a fine example of what A3, among other things, is working on to organize patient-centered, safe, and efficient care.

As a nurse on the pulmonary ward, you will join a warm team of relatively young but highly skilled nurses that offers each other opportunities, safety, and a pleasant working atmosphere.
From our department, career advancement opportunities are offered towards the acute cluster. The knowledge and experience you are offered within nursing ward A3 is a great preparation for advancing towards the specialist departments.
