What you'll get

  • Initially a temporary contract for 24-32 hours per week. Additionally, we offer good employment conditions such as a suitable salary with growth opportunities, participation in the Zorg & Welzijn pension fund, and full reimbursement of travel expenses.

The role

The Medical Center for Animals (MCD) is looking for an enthusiastic, Dutch-speaking veterinary nurse for 24-32 hours per week for the emergency department. In this dynamic and varied role, you will work with a close-knit team and get the opportunity to further develop your veterinary knowledge. Are you a motivated veterinary nurse who wants to work in a challenging environment? Then apply now!

What you'll do

As a veterinary nurse in the emergency department of the Medical Center for Animals, you never know what the shift will bring. No two days are the same, so it is rarely boring. At any moment, an animal may arrive that needs your help urgently. As a result, you will quickly learn to switch gears and take action. Because of this way of working, you will notice that our team is very close-knit; we see each other in all states. This gives you a strong group bond and much mutual respect. This is palpable and characterizes our team. And one thing is certain: working in the emergency departments contributes to the development of your veterinary knowledge and skills.

Due to expansion, we are looking for a Dutch-speaking veterinary nurse. You will work as a veterinary nurse in our emergency clinic, in admissions, and at the reception desk. You will work during the day, in the evening, at night, and on weekends. The range of patients is very diverse and certainly challenging. You will work together with experienced veterinary nurses so that you can learn from each other as colleagues. We have a permanent group of veterinary nurses responsible for the 24/7 admissions and emergency care.

As an emergency veterinary nurse, you will work mainly in the emergency department, but you will also rotate through other departments within the MCD, such as the surgery department. This allows you to build broad experience, work multidisciplinarily, and actively contribute to strong collaboration within the clinic.

About the Medical Center for Animals (MCD)

The Medical Center for Animals is an emergency and specialist clinic for animals. After the University Clinic in Utrecht, the MCD is the largest clinic in the Netherlands and is open 24/7. In total, more than 150 people work at the MCD, divided across 7 departments: emergency, internal medicine, surgery, dermatology, radiology, ophthalmology, and orthopedics. The Emergency Clinic examines and treats animals when their own veterinarian is closed. The specialists work based on a referral from a primary care veterinarian.

The Emergency department is a special and highly professional department. We work with acute and sometimes complex cases within a 24/7 admission unit (basic & medium care). This requires clinical thinking, prioritizing, and taking responsibility, also during evening, night, and weekend shifts.

What does the MCD have to offer?

  • A responsible, varied, and challenging position with room for personal development.

  • An enthusiastic and experienced team.

  • You will work in a dynamic company that is fully in development, with an informal and open working atmosphere.

What kind of veterinary nurse are we looking for and what will you do?

As a veterinary nurse at the MCD, you are allowed to do a great deal and can develop well. The veterinarian listens to your findings, and together we will teach you as much as possible at your own pace. For example, we will teach you how to place an IV, insert a nasogastric tube, or a catheter.

  • You have approximately 2 years of work experience in a veterinary practice. However, even with less experience, you are very welcome to apply. We find motivation and a good fit more important than experience.

  • You can work both independently and in a team.

  • You work carefully and quickly.

What are important skills that you must master as a veterinary nurse?

A foundation in clinical insight is very helpful, but even more important is stress resistance. Technical procedures can be learned, but the ability to remain clear-headed under pressure is worth its weight in gold in an emergency department. The Emergency department is incredibly interesting, but it does demand a lot from our people. Clinical reasoning is important; think of triage, monitoring admitted patients, and the timely signaling of deterioration. In short, it is dynamic and educational, but also responsible, intensive, and sometimes tough.

The development perspective in our Emergency department is large and concrete, for example, in the form of deepening knowledge in emergency care, admission care, monitoring, and where necessary, a RECOVER course or other internal training.

  • Medical-technical skills

  • Triage & emergency assessment

  • Clinical procedures

  • Anesthesia & monitoring

  • Medication knowledge

  • Stress resistance

  • Clinical insight

  • Emotional intelligence

  • Teamwork

  • Organization & multitasking
