The role

What will you do?

The training to become an intensive care nurse is split into 3 parts: the Basic Acute Care (BAZ) training, the core training, and the specific training, all of which are offered guided by EPA (Entrustable Professional Activities). Depending on your prior knowledge and/or previously obtained certificates/diplomas, the full training lasts 18 months (BAZ + core + specific EPAs).

As an intensive care nurse in training, you will start at one of our 4 Intensive Care departments with an induction period of approximately 1 to 2 months. After that, your training begins. During the training, you will be paired with 1 work supervisor specifically assigned to you. The work supervisor is a motivated colleague who has completed additional training in coaching and guidance AND who will teach you the profession. In addition to your supervisor, you will also learn from other experienced colleagues. The training consists of a practical component provided on the work floor, and you will follow the theoretical component of the training at the UMC+ Academy. You can schedule the lesson days yourself.

When you feel you are competent for an EPA, it will be assessed in accordance with regional guidelines. If you have passed the assessment, it means that you are also authorized and competent to actually perform the corresponding actions independently. This means that the level of supervision decreases as you progress further in the training.

Because we, as a department, find it important that you can develop well as a professional in training, we have a study landscape (low-stimulus workspace with its own library and computers) where you can study and/or work on your assignments.

What does your work environment look like?

Do you want to be trained as an Intensive Care nurse within an environment where top-level work is performed? Then you have come to the right place, because we are looking for enthusiastic, motivated colleagues who want to learn the profession in an innovative and constantly evolving environment. As a junior colleague, you will learn from an experienced Intensive Care nurse to provide low-, medium-, and high-complexity care to patients who are (sometimes) in life-threatening situations. As an Intensive Care nurse in training, this means you must constantly push your boundaries to get the best out of yourself and to be there for the dependent patient and their family.

We have also recently introduced a unique combined role in which you care for adult patients in the Intensive Care and children in the Pediatric Intensive Care (PICU). More information about this combined role can be found here.

Still doubting if you are ready for the Intensive Care and the training? Then definitely also look at the possibilities of our Traineeship!

What do we ask of you?

  • You possess a nursing diploma registered in the Netherlands.

  • You have already obtained the Basic Acute Care certificate or are willing to obtain it.

  • Are you in possession of a Belgian nursing diploma? Even then, we would love to get in contact with you. We are currently not processing candidates with the Graduaat Basisverpleegkundige education.

You feel comfortable with the pressure that working in an ICU entails and you are not afraid to push your boundaries. Providing intensive care is teamwork! Collegiality and team spirit are therefore your priorities, and in addition, you possess good communication skills both towards patients and family as well as towards your colleagues.
As an Intensive Care nurse in training, you are open to feedback and guidance and you constantly challenge yourself.

For this position, it applies that you must be able to hand over a Certificate of Conduct (VOG) before the start of employment.

To start successfully in this role, it is important that you have a good command of the Dutch language (minimum C1 level) due to contact with, among others, patients and colleagues. Additionally, it is a requirement that you are permitted to work in the Netherlands (EU/EEA nationality or a valid work permit).

Do you meet these job requirements? Then we will go for you!
