As a nurse within our department, you are responsible for providing nursing care to patients in the psychiatric inpatient ward. You plan, coordinate, and execute highly complex, multidisciplinary care within a nursing team. In doing so, you work closely with psychiatrists, physician assistants, and other disciplines involved in the department, to coordinate treatment and policy together.
The day begins with a meeting in which you discuss the day's tasks and the assignment of patients. Generally, you have responsibility for 2 to 3 patients. You ensure that the patient arrives on time for breakfast and for program components and/or examinations. You join medical discussions, observe, and report based on nursing problems. Where necessary, you have interim consultations with doctors or colleagues.
Drafting and implementing nursing plans is part of your daily tasks. You maintain an overview of made appointments, but in addition, observing and being alert to any changes in the situation is of great importance. Another important aspect of your work is guiding your patient in everything they need help with. This can vary from supporting activities of daily living (ADL) or meals to conducting motivational and ventilating conversations, where you are the point of contact not only for the patient but also for the family.
Additionally, you contribute to the growth, professionalization, and innovation of the department by participating in working groups and training, supervising students, and providing clinical lessons.
The department
Psychiatric nursing ward B1 is a ward for patients with mental health issues. The ward offers a complete package of care ranging from 24-hour care to reintegration into society. Within nursing ward B1, clinical and outpatient (day) treatment, activity guidance, and 3rd-line patient care take place. Conditions that occur include, among others, mood disorders, eating disorders, first psychoses, ALK, Gilles de la Tourette, and OCD. The patient group is very diverse in terms of age, from young adults to the elderly. We also regularly care for mothers with psychiatric complaints, in which case we also admit the child. Twenty patients can be admitted to nursing ward B1. There is direct collaboration with about 30 colleagues across the entire department, from various disciplines.
Furthermore, we are the only department in the region that treats therapy-resistant patients with a mood disorder using Electroconvulsive Therapy (ECT).
The team
On ward B1, you work in a small and dynamic team of approximately 15 colleagues, consisting of nurses with different levels of experience. Everyone's qualities are recognized and utilized, so that we can provide the best care together.
What makes B1 unique is the combination of somatic care and psychiatric issues. This variety requires clinical insight, flexibility, and good cooperation, and makes the work substantively challenging and attractive for nurses who want to work broadly.
The department is fully in development. After a period of changes, we are building a solid and future-proof B1 with a relatively new team. We work methodically, think actively about improvements, and give each other open and honest feedback.
The dynamics can sometimes be high, but through cooperation, humor, and mutual support, you are never alone.
Do you want to help build a unique department where somatics and psychiatry come together? Then we would love to meet you.
