Requirements

What we're looking for

  • At least a HAVO diploma with an exact subject package (Nature and Health/Technology), a completed MBO-4 education in healthcare (with math and Dutch well above passing), or an HBO nursing degree.

The role

As a trainee surgical assistant, you will learn how to support our surgeons during operations. Your tasks are crucial to the success of the procedure.

What you'll do

  • As a circulator, you are the link between the sterile and non-sterile fields. You ensure that the surgical assistants and surgeons are provided with all necessary sterile materials.

  • You also ensure that the necessary technical equipment is available for use.

  • Additionally, you perform administrative tasks that are essential for the smooth running of the operation.

  • As a scrub nurse, you will learn how to stay one step ahead of the surgeon by providing the correct instruments on time.

  • You assist the surgeon with the operation and learn how to assist effectively.

How you'll work

With us, you work flexibly, with a schedule that is known well in advance. Operations, meetings, and gatherings may occasionally take place outside of regular working hours. You must also be willing to work on-call shifts, both during the week and on weekends. This means you must be present at our OR complex within 15 minutes of a telephone call. These shifts will only be scheduled during the course of your training. If you do not live nearby, we offer the possibility to stay overnight at the hospital.

About the training

Additional information

The training begins with a pre-professional period (BVP) of approximately 4 months. During the BVP, you will start with six weeks of full-time school. This is followed by a period of internships in the OR and other departments. This period is focused on getting to know the hospital as a whole.

Additional information

After successfully completing the BVP, the professional guidance period (BBP) follows. During this time, you will alternate theory with practical learning in the OR complex. As the training progresses, the practical component expands in complexity, allowing you to grow into a responsible and expert surgical assistant.

What do we ask of you?

The training to become a surgical assistant is a full-time in-service program and lasts approximately 3 years. The training starts on March 1, 2027, at the Amstel Academie in Amsterdam.
What do we ask of you?
As a surgical assistant, you remain calm under pressure and know how to act in hectic situations. You have a tactful and upright attitude, which puts patients at ease. With your personal approach and professional work ethic, you quickly gain trust. Additionally, you work accurately according to procedures and guidelines and have an eye for detail. You are a strong communicator and take initiative when necessary. Whether you work independently or together with a team, you take responsibility and contribute to the success of every operation.

Requirements

  • During the training, the competencies of perseverance, resilience, and persistence are of decisive importance to successfully complete this demanding program. The training, in combination with working, requires a lot of energy and time. We ask you to be truly aware of this before making the choice for this training. If you are truly willing to commit yourself to this, we would very much look forward to receiving your application!

During the BVP, a contract for 36 hours per week, including an allowance or salary (depending on your previous education). Once you have successfully completed this period, you will receive a training-employment contract for 31.5 hours per week (3 out of 4 days) for the remainder of your training. The salary during this period depends on your previous education, work experience, and the year of training.
