The Brain+Nerve Center (HZC) is a collaboration of ten specialties within the MUMC+ in which the clinical and operational approaches are jointly coordinated and implemented. The HZC focuses on patients with complex conditions related to the brain and/or nervous system, where the conditions often consist of multiple types of complaints and are characterized by complexity and comorbidity. Because the complaints are investigated by specialists from various medical fields, we can perform efficient diagnostics and treatments, also for complex, tertiary care questions. Furthermore, within the HZC, the various specialties work closely together in the fields of scientific research, education, and training, whereby innovations and fundamental knowledge are continuously generated and further developed.
At the HZC, specialists from the following medical fields work together:
Psychiatry
Medical Psychology
Neurology
Neurosurgery
Clinical Neurophysiology
Audiology
The Psychiatry department leads the Psychiatry University Clinic (PUK) of the MUMC+. Within it, the department focuses on academic psychiatric and hospital psychiatric care within 5 care pathways, being 1) Cognition 2) Psychosomatics, 3) Mood, 4) Child, Youth & Adolescents and 5) Eating disorders.
The care processes take place across the settings of outpatient clinic, day treatment, and clinic within the PUK, and also via psychiatric consultation in other departments in the MUMC+. Together with the Medical Psychology department and the psychiatric nursing ward, the department provides Mental Health Care (GGZ) within the MUMC+. The staff members of the psychiatry department are directly connected to the Department of Psychiatry and Neuropsychology at Maastricht University. The department holds a unique position in the region, where, together with network partners, the academization of psychiatry and mental health care in care, research, and training is shaped in South-East Netherlands. An important part of the department in this regard concerns the independent (university) training to become a psychiatrist within the MUMC+, together with network partners.
Together with the department within UM and Mondriaan, the MUMC+ has developed a network of active care programs in regional mental health care over the past 10 years, with much attention to transmuralization, continuous care evaluation, and a proper balance between scientific evidence and the unique experiences of individual patients. The region has a national exemplary function in the field of psychosis care, neuropsychiatry (also in the context of gerontopsychiatry), and hospital psychiatry (top-referral and nationally unique MedPsych units for adults and children).
The psychiatrists attach importance to cultivating and maintaining a collegial atmosphere and a safe training climate. On Friday afternoons, there is a local educational program that can be participated in. Maastricht University is one of the few Dutch Universities with a KNAW-recognized top psychiatric research program.
