Every Feadship is custom built and cannot exist without your contribution. Therefore, there is always a piece of yourself in it. That gives a sense of responsibility. But also certainly a sense of pride. And that is perhaps the most important thing we can offer you.
The role
Every year, an average of two superyachts leave the dry docks of the Koninklijke De Vries Scheepsbouw shipyard. Luxury, custom-made yachts that distinguish themselves through the quality of construction, engineering, and finishing.
As a piping fitter, you will make a direct contribution to that. You build the hydraulic piping systems that run throughout the yacht. You work on the entire boat, but especially in the engine room. Everything you make and install must be technically correct and look sleek and well-maintained. Even the technical spaces of a Feadship are finished to the finest detail.
What you'll do
Working on one yacht, from start to finish
You work on superyachts approximately 80 meters long. You work together with your colleagues on the yachts from the moment the hull arrives until the launch (the christening). You usually work in a pair of two. Together, you ensure that the complete piping work on the yacht is correct.
You divide your time approximately 50 percent in the workshop and 50 percent on board:
- In the workshop, you bend the pipes.
- On board, you install the piping in the correct location in the yacht.
Custom work from diagrams
What makes this work special is that you do not work from fully detailed drawings, but from diagrams. You perform the measurements on board yourself and determine the piping route. In one working day, depending on the complexity, you might measure - for example - two sections of EO-piping of approximately six meters for a crew space. You determine where the bends go: starboard or port, the angles, and the mutual distances. You work primarily with hydraulic systems and you weld and install the brackets using TIG (aluminum, steel, and stainless steel), so that the piping work is finished in a sleek, logical, and professional manner.
"What distinguishes this work is the customization. At many companies, pipes are supplied prefab and you only have to install them. At De Vries, you do that entire process yourself: measuring, bending, and installing. That requires overview, accuracy, and responsibility."
This is what you will be doing as a Piping Fitter
For whom this work is interesting
You do not necessarily have to come from yacht or shipbuilding. This work also fits well with, for example:
- a piping fitter with experience in utility construction or residential construction (such as a heating fitter), who is ready for more complex and high-end work;
- a fitter who is used to measuring, bending, and thinking of solutions themselves instead of just installing;
- a craftsman who tinkers with cars in their free time and understands how technical systems are interconnected.
You divide your time approximately 50 percent in the workshop and 50 percent on board:
- In the workshop, you bend the pipes.
- On board, you install the piping in the correct location in the yacht.
