The role

Royal Van Lent Shipyard, together with other partners within Feadship, builds unique superyachts for an international clientele. Each yacht is designed and built completely to custom specifications, with innovation, quality, and craftsmanship at its core. From our locations in Kaag and Amsterdam, hundreds of specialists work daily on the realization of the highest quality superyachts in the world.

Within the Electrical Engineering department in Amsterdam, you will be given the space to conduct research that contributes directly to future projects. The results of your graduation research will be used as a design and decision-making framework for new yachts.

The electrical power on board superyachts continues to grow. As a result, traditional low-voltage systems are increasingly hitting technical limits regarding short-circuit power, weight, space utilization, and integration. Therefore, we are investigating the possibilities of a 6.6 kV high-voltage grid as a future standard for the largest yachts.

This is what you will do as a Superyacht Construction (University-level Electrical Engineering Internship) | Amsterdam

During this graduation assignment, you will research:

The end result of your research is a substantiated 6.6 kV distribution concept for a reference yacht and a practical design guideline for future projects.

What you'll do

  • At which power level a 6.6 kV network becomes more attractive than a traditional 690 V AC system or a DC grid.
  • Which network architecture is most suitable for future superyachts, such as HV AC, DC, or hybrid solutions.
  • How protection, grounding, and safety must be configured within a high-voltage system.
  • How batteries, fuel cells, and future sustainable energy sources can be integrated into a high-voltage grid.
  • How a high-voltage shore power connection can be designed according to international standards.
  • The impact of high voltage on power quality, EMC, noise, and physical integration on board.
  • Which regulations, tests, and operational procedures are required for certification and safe operation.

What you bring

  • You are pursuing a University-level (WO) degree in Electrical Engineering
  • You are interested in energy systems, electrification, and technology
  • You are analytical, eager to learn, and precise
  • You take initiative and work in a structured manner
  • You enjoy collaborating with technical specialists

We find your motivation more important than your experience. Show us what drives you.
