About Anton van Leeuwenhoek
In their own words
About the company & team
As DPO within the AVL, you supervise the application of and compliance with European and national laws and regulations, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the AI Act, and the Healthcare Quality Registries Act (Wkz). You hold an independent position within the organization and, from that position, you provide advice to the board and the organization. As DPO, you are registered with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens). You work closely with the Board of Directors, while maintaining sufficient distance to judge independently and offer opposition where necessary.
What makes the AVL unique is that it consists of a national oncological hospital and an internationally renowned research institute. Care and research go hand in hand here and are closely interwoven. Clinical research often has immediate applications in patient care. And our fundamental research provides a scientific foundation. This creates an innovative environment in service of the patient, which also partly determines the content of the DPO role. For example, it is possible that for scientific research, medical personal data of patients or groups of patients are analyzed to gain insight into the disease and, consequently, appropriate innovative treatments. In this complex playing field, the DPO must be able to navigate to strike a good and adequate balance between data protection and data sharing, and to advise the board and organization on this.
Organizationally, the DPO position is located within the Executive Office. You report content-wise directly to the Board of Directors. You collaborate with, among others, the information security team, various legal departments, physicians, research committees, and researchers within the AVL.
At the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, we all commit ourselves to the same goal: the best care for every patient and every type of cancer. That is no small feat. But it is not impossible. Here, science and care work together on innovation. Time and again, we find new ways to help people with cancer worldwide. Here, we save lives, win time, and promote quality.
