The Gastroenterology (MDL) oncology department of the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (AVL) is looking for an enthusiastic Gastroenterologist (MDL physician) for a one-year fellowship. The position is available as of December 1, 2026, with the actual start date negotiable.
Our fellowship is intended for a beginning Gastroenterologist (MDL physician) who wishes to further develop within oncological MDL care and advanced endoscopy. The fellowship offers plenty of room for an individual training program, tailored to the specific learning goals and interests of the fellow. Within the areas of expertise of our group, the program can be customized in consultation.
Our department currently consists of 9 MDL physicians, 7 MDL oncologists, and 8 nurse practitioners. Patients are treated multidisciplinarily, and there is close collaboration within the MDL tumor working group with surgeons, radiation therapists, nuclear medicine specialists, radiologists, and pathologists.
The department focuses on early diagnosis and innovative treatments of gastrointestinal tumors. We specialize in the treatment of patients with colorectal carcinoma, esophageal and gastric carcinoma, hereditary gastrointestinal syndromes, neuroendocrine tumors, and anal carcinoma.
We possess almost all modern advanced endoscopic techniques, including EUS and interventional endoscopy, stent placements, endoscopic vacuum therapy, ERCP, and endoscopic resection techniques such as ESD, EID, and eFTR. Additionally, colonoscopies are performed at our department as part of the colorectal cancer screening program.
In addition to patient care, there is much attention within the department for clinical and translational scientific research.
The fellowship lasts one year and is aimed at further deepening and broadening expertise within MDL oncology and advanced endoscopy. An important starting principle is that the fellowship is designed individually in consultation with the fellow. At the beginning of the fellowship, the learning goals are established and translated into a personal program. Depending on your experience, ambitions, and specific learning goals, emphasis may lie on one or more of the aforementioned areas of expertise within the department.
The content of the fellowship can be adjusted during the year based on the progress and development of the fellow. With this, we offer room for both the broadening of general oncological MDL expertise and targeted deepening in specific endoscopic techniques.
You will work closely with experienced MDL physicians, MDL oncologists, and nurse practitioners and will be part of the multidisciplinary team surrounding patients with gastrointestinal malignancies.
We are looking for an enthusiastic beginning MDL physician who wishes to further develop within MDL oncology and advanced endoscopy.
You:
are registered as an MDL physician or will complete your training as an MDL physician in the short term;
have a demonstrable interest in oncological MDL care;
are motivated to further develop your endoscopic skills;
have an interest in one or more of the areas of expertise present within our department;
are eager to learn and are open to an individually composed training program;
can collaborate well with different disciplines within a multidisciplinary setting;
Experience with diagnostic EUS is a plus, but the fellowship is explicitly intended for further development and deepening. The exact content will be coordinated with your already acquired skills and personal learning goals.
This concerns a fellowship for a duration of one year. During the fellowship, you will participate in the activities and shifts within the MDL team. The employment conditions are in accordance with the AMS regulation.
Are you interested in a fellowship in which you can develop yourself over the course of one year within MDL oncology and advanced endoscopy, with room for a program that aligns with your personal learning goals?
For more information about the fellowship, you can contact dr. W.H.M. Verbeek, MDL physician, or Dr. J.E.G. IJspeert, MDL physician, via e-mail w.verbeek@nki.nl or j.ijspeert@nki.nl.
