Senior Environmental Manager

In this role, you are responsible for developing, organizing, and managing environmental management within complex projects and programs. Your activities include:

• Developing environmental strategies for explorations, plan developments, and implementation projects;
• Fulfilling the IPM role of environmental manager within large multidisciplinary projects;
• Leading and coaching environmental teams within complex projects;
• Acting as a strategic partner for provinces, municipalities, water boards, landowners, interest groups, and societal partners;
• Identifying and managing environmental risks and translating these into project decisions;
• Responsible for interface management between the environment and other tracks (e.g., technology);
• Coaching our junior and medior environmental managers, also from our Arcadis knowledge group Environmental Management;

The Netherlands is developing towards a sustainable society, and we are helping to make that development possible. Initiating and developing sustainable adjustments to the energy grid requires major changes in our country. In doing so, major societal challenges such as adapting to climate change and the housing construction task will profoundly change our spatial environment in the coming decades. These are no longer standalone projects, but a reason for integrated area development, in which themes such as participation, spatial integration, ecology, health, and climate adaptation play an important role.

As a Senior Environmental Manager, you play a key role in these complex tasks. You are the connecting link between clients, governments, stakeholders, and project teams. You operate at the intersection of technology, governance, planning procedures, and participation. You understand how complex decision-making processes work and know how to identify interests, risks, and opportunities early on and translate them into a successful project approach. This role requires more than just stakeholder management. We are looking for someone who:

• combines administrative sensitivity with substantive depth;
• knows how to bring complex interests together into feasible solutions and approaches;
• can communicate effectively at administrative, civil service, and management levels;
• helps clients with issues surrounding the energy transition, spatial planning procedures, and societal acceptance;
• sees opportunities for new assignments and helps develop long-term client relationships.

We mostly work for public clients (ministries, provinces, municipalities, and grid operators), but also for private clients such as industrial companies. Together with the client's environmental manager, you feel responsible for creating sufficient support to make the project succeed. In doing so, you do not only manage the relationship with the environment, but also fulfill a strategic advisory role towards the client and project management. Based on the experience you have, you take control of the environmental process in projects. For complex integrated projects, you lead an environmental team, whether or not from an IPM role. In this, you work closely with the project and technical manager and are often the link between the environment and technology. In projects, you guide your junior and medior colleagues in their professional and personal development. You can also help with preparing quotes to win projects from clients. Additionally, alongside your role as senior environmental manager, you can also take on the role of project leader within projects. The choice is yours, because your development is central to us.

• Environmental Manager for the environmental study regarding the upgrading of high-voltage line Maasbracht-Graetheide 380kV and new construction of high-voltage station Einighausen - TenneT
• Process Manager within various municipal energy issues - RVO Expertpool
• Strategic environmental manager within the Exploration of onshore connection of offshore wind (VAWOZ) - looking at how we can best bring the energy from offshore wind farms, yet to be built, to land - Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate Policy.
• NRD and MER Zeeuws Vlaanderen 380kV - (environmental) study for a new high-voltage connection between Borssele and Terneuzen. This connection crosses Natura 2000 area Westerschelde - TenneT.
• Environmental Manager at Net op Zee project - Doordewind - (environmental) study for a new high-voltage connection via the North Sea, Schiermonnikoog, the Wadden Sea, and onshore to the Eemshaven - TenneT

We are looking for a team player who gets energy from tackling a project together. You like to think along in solutions, are digitally driven, and possess extensive experience as an environmental manager within complex decision-making processes for energy projects. You move easily within a large network organization and excel in integrated thinking and flexibility. You work accurately and independently and, in addition, make an active contribution to knowledge transfer within the team and the broader organization by sharing your expertise and involving colleagues in substantive developments. Your profile:

• At least a completed HBO (higher professional education) degree and affinity with our type of projects.
• At least 7 years of experience as an environmental manager within complex decision-making processes, within the government, a grid operator, a consultancy, or an engineering firm.
• Experience with administrative decision-making and stakeholder management at a strategic level.
• Knowledge of the Environment Act (Omgevingswet), participation processes, and spatial procedures.
• You are communicatively skilled and have a sense of the right tone at the right time.
• Experience with explorations and plan studies in the field of energy infrastructure is a plus.
