Strategic Environmental Manager

Our WSP BU Water wants to strengthen the expertise of our Environment team in Arnhem, Maastricht or Nieuwegein. Therefore, we are looking for a strategic environmental manager.

As a strategic advisor for environmental management, you provide direction to projects in the fields of climate adaptation and energy transition. You work on integrated area developments and policy preparation in the planning and design phase of complex challenges. You bring people, interests, and ambitions together, and ensure that ideas are not only inspiring but also feasible.

Think of providing a solution for grid congestion by integrating a new high-voltage route or participation regarding dike reinforcement. You move smoothly between strategy and practice, and translate social, administrative, legal, and technical challenges into a supported approach.

No two days are the same, but below we give you an example of a possible workday:

• You start with a meeting about a plan study for dike reinforcement in combination with infrastructure. You analyze the administrative frameworks and, together with the team, concretize the approach for the design process.

• Afterward, you work on a participation strategy for the expansion of a high-voltage connection. You discuss with a technical advisor how interest groups can remain structurally involved.

• In the afternoon, you coordinate the progress of conditioning and impact studies with colleagues and discuss the course to be followed with your client. After that, you stop by the legal expert within your team to seek advice regarding an environmental permit for an ongoing project.

• You end the day with your colleagues from the field to share knowledge and new developments, and to discuss how you apply them in your work.

You have a broad perspective and move easily between administration, policy, and practice. You can switch between content and process, and you know when to provide direction and when to listen. Additionally:

• You have experience in drafting planning products for explorations and plan studies.

• You are strong in setting up participation processes around complex challenges.

• You have a sense for political and social relations.

• You write and advise clearly—whether it is an internal memo or a presentation to administration.
