The role

logistics coordinator colleague; "As a logistics coordinator, you and your colleagues resolve disruptions in the logistics train service and you immediately see the effect of your choices. That makes the work concrete and meaningful".

What you'll do

A train unexpectedly breaks down. As a result, equipment that is needed elsewhere later is no longer in the right place. Meanwhile, the rest of the train service continues as usual. What comes first? Which train gets priority? And how do you get the schedule back in order with as few extra movements as possible? As a Logistics Planner in Zwolle, you make that assessment.

Using various NS systems, you keep track of where the equipment is located, where it is needed, and whether everything is proceeding according to plan. Does a disruption occur? Then you quickly map out the consequences and determine what is needed to allow the operation to continue as smoothly as possible.

Additionally:

  • You set your priorities when multiple situations require attention at the same time.
  • You determine how to get equipment back to the right place as efficiently as possible.
  • You coordinate with, among others, train drivers, shunting drivers, colleagues within the operation, and ProRail.
  • You monitor the execution of your plan and adjust again when the situation changes.
  • You take into account the consequences of your choices for other trains, colleagues, and parts of the operation.

You do not always have all the information you would ideally like to have. Yet, a decision must sometimes be made. Waiting too long can, after all, make a problem larger. You therefore gather what is necessary, oversee the consequences, and then dare to make a choice. Sometimes you work for longer periods with concentration on your own tasks; sometimes multiple disruptions require attention at the same time. You must therefore be able to both zoom in on details and zoom out to see what consequences a choice has for the rest of the operation.

An average day as a Logistics Coordinator:
You begin your shift with a handover from a colleague. Everything seems quiet, until later in the morning a defective train breaks down in your region. As a result, movements get stuck and pressure on the tracks quickly builds up.

You map out the situation, make a plan, and coordinate with colleagues from adjustment and execution. You communicate with a shunting driver, think ahead, and prevent the problem from getting larger. As soon as calm returns, you ensure the schedule is correct again and that trains still go to cleaning or maintenance.

Additional information

  • You will see immediately what your decisions mean for the train service in the Northeast region.
  • You will be given a lot of autonomy and responsibility during disruptions.
  • You will work in a close-knit team where colleagues help each other and work together to keep the operation running.
  • You will receive practical training to learn the systems, processes, and the work.

Where you will work

You work at the Regional Control Center in Zwolle for the North East region (Zwolle, Groningen, Leeuwarden, Hengelo, Enschede, and Zutphen). Per shift, you work together with approximately 15 colleagues on the floor. There is great solidarity within the team. Colleagues help each other when necessary and do not only keep an eye on their own activities. That is important in this position: you must be able to concentrate on your own area of focus and at the same time continue to notice what is happening around you.

You must therefore be able to zoom in and out. Sometimes it is quiet for longer periods and concentration is needed to remain alert. At other moments, multiple situations require attention simultaneously and you must determine what has priority within a short time.

The position is performed in a full continuous roster with early, late, and full night shifts, also on weekends and public holidays. Especially full night shifts can be intensive and have an influence on your sleep rhythm. It is therefore important that you consciously choose to work irregular hours.

The shifts are:

06:45 to 14:50

14:45 to 22:50

22:45 to 06:50

You do not need to know all our systems and processes at the start. For this, you will follow a training program that lasts on average about four months and consists of: learning on the job, e-learning, assignments, and simulations. During the training, full-time work is preferred to build up sufficient rhythm and to learn the work well. You will receive guidance from a workplace mentor until you are completely ready.

These are the job requirements

You do not need to be a logistics planner yet. We find it more important that you can show from previous work experience that you have carried responsibility independently and have made choices.

  • You possess at least an MBO-4 level of working and thinking ability.
  • Experience with logistics, planning, transport, or another operational environment is a plus, but not a requirement.
  • You possess work experience in which you carried responsibility independently and made decisions.
  • You can oversee multiple matters at once and determine what needs attention first.
  • You dare to make decisions when not all information is available yet.
  • You remain concentrated during quiet moments and maintain an overview during busy moments.
  • You coordinate clearly with various colleagues and involved parties.
  • You are willing to work early, late, and full night shifts.
  • You have experience with or interest in screen-based work and ICT systems.
  • A good command of the Dutch language, both orally and in writing.

These are the employment conditions

For this position, you will receive, among other things:

  • A starting salary between € 3,278.88 and € 3,454.56 gross per month based on 36 hours, depending on experience and the possibility to eventually grow to € 4,425.84 gross per month. During your training for the first 6 months, a starting scale applies.
  • On top of your salary, you receive an average of € 400 to € 700 gross per month in irregular hours allowance.
  • 144 hours of statutory leave for full-time employment, plus extra leave depending on age.
  • 8% holiday allowance and 3% end-of-year bonus.
  • The possibility to exchange 3 Christian holidays for 3 non-Christian holidays.
  • A good pension scheme.
  • Free train travel in 2nd class.
  • Advantageous travel in 1st class against a small personal contribution.
  • Free travel during off-peak hours for your family.
  • Discount on European train travel after 1 year.
  • A choice model with, for example, extra leave, bicycle scheme, or extra pension accrual.
