The role

That is why you want to work as a Safety & Service employee at NS

What you'll do

This is a role in which you are actively engaged with safety. You ensure safety by making contact and acting decisively when necessary. You are among the people and are visibly present at the station and on the train. You have active contact with travelers and colleagues and intervene when tension arises. Your work revolves around addressing people, de-escalating, and acting. Not afterwards, but at the moment itself.

You monitor the safety of travelers and colleagues. You work preventatively and with a service orientation, where safety always comes first. Together we ensure that travelers can make their journey safely. The situation at the station or on the train can change within seconds. From a quiet shift to a moment where quick, thoughtful action is required. You are visibly present and address people regarding behavior and rules. You resolve most situations by remaining calm and communicating clearly. If that is not enough, you act professionally. What you personally bring to this role includes, among other things, mental resilience: staying calm, setting boundaries, and continuing to act when pressure increases.

This is what you will do as a Safety & Service employee

  • Monitoring safety at the station and on the train.
  • Addressing travelers regarding behavior and rules.
  • Preventing and managing conflict situations.
  • Acting in a de-escalating manner during tension or aggression.
  • Taking enforcement action in case of criminal offenses and emergencies.
  • Searching, drawing up official reports, and using force within your authority.
  • Collaborating with colleagues and chain partners such as the police.
  • Providing service to travelers, without losing sight of safety.

Training:
If you are hired, you will follow an internal training program of 26 weeks (36 hours per week). You will work in practice at the location under the guidance of a workplace mentor and you will attend lessons at the NS Learning Center in Amersfoort. You will also have workplace assignments and force and self-defense training (RTGB). This allows you to combine professional knowledge with practical experience.

More information about the training program can be found here.

Where you will work

You will work from the Utrecht location, one of the busiest stations in the Netherlands. Utrecht Centraal is a busy and dynamic station. That requires people who maintain an overview, stay calm, and dare to act. You will be part of a team of 52 Safety & Service colleagues and 2 team managers.

A shift always starts with a briefing with your colleagues in which you discuss what is happening during that shift. As a duo, you will head out and ensure you are visibly working, at the station and on the train. You may also be deployed to another station if there are emergencies.

These are the job requirements

You understand that safety begins with communication. You remain calm, even under pressure. You know how to act professionally and respectfully. You always work together with one or more colleagues. The following is important for this position:

  • MBO 3 work and thinking level.
  • Age 18+.
  • You have a driving license B, or will obtain it within 1 year.
  • Own transport (bicycle, scooter, car) to get to your location.
  • Good vision and hearing. Glasses or lenses are no problem up to max +5 or -8.
  • A positive Certificate of Good Conduct with Police Data (VOG-P) is a requirement to start in this position.

Furthermore, you are:

  • Mentally resilient and not easily startled by conflict or aggression.
  • Stress-resistant and calm. You remain clear during tense situations.
  • Someone who dares to address people and knows how to set boundaries.
  • People-oriented. You provide service where necessary.
  • Physically fit to run across the station if necessary.
  • Good communication skills in the Dutch and English languages.

Please note:

  • With a 36-hour work week, you work 40 hours one week and 32 hours the next. This means you will be scheduled for one day off every 2 weeks.
  • After the training period, it is possible to work part-time (24 or 32 hours per week) following approval from your team manager.
  • You are willing to work according to a full continuous roster. This means you can be scheduled for day shifts, night shifts, weekend shifts, and on public holidays on an alternating basis. The principle is that you work 2 weekends per month. It is important that you are available for all shifts.
