The Psychiatry department of the MUMC+ is looking for two enthusiastic psychiatrists with a broad clinical-academic profile and an interest in development and innovation.
Your duties will consist of patient care, coordination of patient care, teaching and training, and research in the field of academic hospital psychiatry. Clinically, you will work in a multidisciplinary team in the Psychiatric Inpatient Department (MPU) and/or perform tasks within the outpatient clinic and/or consultative service of the MUMC+.
The Psychiatric Inpatient Department (also known as nursing ward B1) is a central, multidisciplinary clinical setting focused on diagnostics and/or care pathways for admitted patients with highly complex problems, for tertiary and quaternary healthcare. It currently concerns an open, clinical environment, suitable for a maximum of 15 admitted patients.
The primary patient target groups for the inpatient department are:
i) patients with severe, complex psychopathology and a suspicion of an organic cause, or severe, complex psychopathology for which clinical diagnostics are indicated;
ii) patients with severe, persistent, psychiatric disorders who are eligible for neuromodulatory interventions, such as deep brain stimulation, rTMS, or electroconvulsive therapy;
iii) patients with complex somatic and psychiatric comorbidity, including younger patients (16-24 years) and mother-child admissions.
An integral, transdiagnostic vision of health is assumed, and work is done on personalized concrete objectives regarding diagnostics, stabilization, and treatment, whereby initial steps regarding rehabilitation and recovery are also prepared. The patient's system (loved ones, family, and own practitioner) is directly involved in admission and in diagnostics and treatment. The disciplines working in the department are nurses, psychiatrists, occupational therapists, psychiatry physician assistants, nurse practitioners (in training), creative therapists, dietitians, physiotherapists, clinical (neuro)psychologists, and GZ-psychologists or psychotherapists. Additionally, there is intensive interdisciplinary collaboration with other medical specialists and paramedical disciplines through consultation or co-treatment.
Within the Psychiatry Outpatient Clinic, we focus on complex diagnostics and treatment where the boundary between body and mind is central. Our care is divided into the following specialist pillars:
Persistent Somatic Complaints (ALK)
In close cooperation with other somatic departments, we offer specialized care for patients with persistent somatic complaints. The focus lies on the interaction between psychological factors and physical symptoms, where an integral approach is essential for recovery.
Mood and Anxiety Clinic
This clinic is focused on the diagnostics and treatment of complex mood disorders and anxiety disorders. We apply evidence-based interventions that closely align with the individual care needs of the patient.
Memory Clinic
At the memory clinic, extensive research into cognitive decline and dementia takes place. Through a multidisciplinary approach (often in collaboration with neurology and geriatrics), we map out the causes of memory problems.
Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Gilles de la Tourette
We offer a highly specialized trajectory for patients with Gilles de la Tourette syndrome who are eligible for Deep Brain Stimulation. This is an advanced treatment for patients for whom regular therapies offer insufficient results.
Second Opinion and Complex Diagnostics
We act as an expertise center for stalled treatments within Specialized Mental Health Care (SGGZ).
Furthermore, as part of the on-call staff, you will participate in the psychiatric availability services of the MUMC+.
In addition to your tasks in direct patient care, the Psychiatry Department offers ample opportunities for personal development in other areas, such as in the fields of teaching, training, research, and policy tasks.
In the field of teaching, you will participate in education in the field of psychiatry within the medical studies at Maastricht University, within the training to become a psychiatrist, and in the context of education for other disciplines.
The MUMC+ has an independent training program for psychiatrists in which 3 to 4 residents (aios) enter annually. There is close cooperation with other training institutions in the region, including Zuyderland MC, Mondriaan, METggz, and the Mutsaersstichting.
Finally, it is expected that you will participate in (facilitating research or conducting it) scientific research within the department in collaboration with the Mental Health and Neuroscience Research Institute (MHeNs) of the UM and within the Brain + Nerve Center (HZC) of the MUMC+.
If suitability is demonstrated, there is the possibility to grow into a higher academic position.
The Psychiatry department focuses on academic psychiatric and hospital psychiatric care within a number of care pathways, namely 1) Cognition and neuropsychiatry, 2) Psychosomatic multimorbidity, 3) Mood-psychosis spectrum, 4) Children, Youth & Adolescents. The care processes take place across settings: from the outpatient clinic and day treatment to the inpatient clinic, and also via psychiatric consultation in other departments in the MUMC+. Together with the Medical Psychology department and the psychiatric nursing ward, the department thus provides mental health care (ggz) within the MUMC+. The staff members of the Psychiatry department are directly connected to the Department of Psychiatry and Neuropsychology at Maastricht University. The department has a unique position in the region where, together with network partners, the academization of psychiatry and mental health care in care, research, and education is shaped in South-East Netherlands. An important part of the department in this regard is the independent (university) training to become a psychiatrist within the MUMC+, together with network partners.
