You possess a junior doctor diploma, BIG registration, and you have demonstrable interest in the ENT specialty and research in particular.
You organize your work efficiently, are eager to learn, self-reflective, and sincere. You develop your own vision on research and the ENT specialty, so that as a good professional you can look toward the future and contribute in a broad sense to the development of ENT. Science is an integral part of your work.
To start successfully in this role, it is important that you have a good command of the Dutch language (minimum B2 level) due to contact with, among others, patients and colleagues. Additionally, it is a requirement that you are permitted to work in the Netherlands (EU/EEA nationality or a valid work permit).
Do you meet these job requirements? Then we will go for you!
Depending on education and experience, a suitable salary proposal will be made. For the duties as an ENT resident (ANIOS), you will be appointed at the MUMC+; for the doctoral research, you will be appointed as a PhD candidate at Maastricht University. The applicable employment conditions and collective labor agreement (CAO) for both appointments apply.
We are looking for a junior doctor with clear ambitions in Otorhinolaryngology (ENT) who wants to combine scientific research with clinical development. This position is part of an Academic Fund track within the Maastricht University Medical Center (MUMC+) and offers a continuous academic-clinical development track: a PhD track of approximately 38-40 months, combined with part-time clinical duties as an ENT resident (ANIOS), with prospects for a subsequent residency position as an ENT specialist trainee (AIOS) upon good performance.
The doctoral research focuses on improving and personalizing the follow-up of patients who have been treated curatively for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck region. Central to this is the question of how patients can be better followed up after treatment, with attention to both the timely recognition of a recurrence and the impact of follow-up on patients' well-being and quality of life.
Within the project, a prospective clinical study is being conducted in which a more active and personalized follow-up strategy is investigated. In this, clinical, patient-reported, and biological information are combined. In addition to patient-centered outcomes, the detection and treatability of recurrences, diagnostic performance, healthcare utilization, and the feasibility of the follow-up strategy are evaluated, among others. The project also contains a translational component with possibilities for future biomarker research.
As a PhD candidate, you will be involved in all phases of the research, from further protocol development and study startup to patient inclusion and follow-up, data analysis, and the writing and presentation of scientific publications. In doing so, you will work within a multidisciplinary team with expertise in the fields of head and neck oncology, medical oncology, biostatistics, and laboratory research. There is explicit room for your own initiative and the development of additional research questions.
Upon good performance, the track offers prospects for subsequent entry into the ENT specialist training program.
The training duration is 5 years and is divided into 3-month internships. Additionally, two non-academic internships of two times 9 months are completed in a hospital with accreditation for the non-academic part of the training.
With the introduction of the new training structure (ENTER 2), there is much attention to the guidance and assessment of the AIOS during training, in which Short Practical Assessments (KPB) and OSATS are central. Additionally, an individual training plan is developed with the AIOS. In addition to learning on the job, structured education is provided, such as patient-related discussions, practical education on human cadaver material, and AIOS participate in specific ENT-oriented national exams, as well as the mini-courses advised by ENTER. There are 4 cross-disciplinary profiles, namely science and evidence-based medicine, quality and patient safety, medical leadership, and education & training. For all 4 profiles, an AIOS achieves the basic level, with further development to the highest level for one profile as desired.
The combined position concerns two temporary employment contracts with a total duration of 38–40 months and an average working time of 36 hours per week, divided between an appointment at the MUMC+ as an ENT resident (ANIOS) and an appointment at Maastricht University as a PhD candidate.

The Brain+Nerve Center (HZC) is a collaboration of six specialties within the MUMC+, where the clinical and business approaches are jointly coordinated and implemented. The HZC is aimed at patients with complex conditions related to the brain and/or nervous system, where the conditions often consist of multiple types of complaints and are characterized by complexity and co-morbidity. Because the complaints are investigated by specialists from different medical fields, we can perform efficient diagnostics and treatment, also for complex, tertiary care questions.
Furthermore, within the HZC, the various specialties work closely together in the fields of scientific research, education, and training, whereby innovations and fundamental knowledge are continuously generated and further developed.
Within the HZC, specialists from the following medical fields work together: Neurology, Neurosurgery, Psychiatry, Medical Psychology, Clinical Neurophysiology, and ENT.
Within the ENT medical department, the entire spectrum of Otorhinolaryngology is practiced, and patient care, research, and education take place through various medical specialists, researchers, and junior doctors. Additionally, the Audiology Center and the Balance sub-department fall under the ENT department.
