The role

Nice to know (you)

  • Every day, millions of travelers use digital channels such as the Schiphol App and Schiphol.nl. The Commercial Technology department is tasked with optimizing both visible value for the traveler and strategic business impact from these channels. And all this in a complex, dynamic environment that never stands still. We also facilitate our Cargo community with digital solutions.
  • The primary task of our Cargo platform is to support cargo handling in a digital and seamless manner. This department is known for thinking from the customer's perspective. We start with the (customer) question, prioritize based on value, test quickly, and improve continuously. Decisions are made based on customer and business impact, not on hierarchy.
  • We are going for it: Schiphol must belong to the top 3 of European airports.

Connecting your world

As a Solution Architect, you are responsible for drafting and documenting solution architectures for projects and digital solutions. In doing so, you move easily between business, architecture, and software development. You map out business objectives, functional requirements, and non-functional requirements and translate these into a solution architecture that is secure, feasible, and future-proof. And how you approach this? That is up to you. We rely on the way you build connections with other people. You will apply your talents to:

  • analyzing business needs and translating them into functional requirements, non-functional requirements, and appropriate architectural solutions.
  • designing solutions for the secure exposure of data and functionality to customers, partners, and other applications.
  • determining which integration type best fits an information flow, such as REST APIs, webhooks, messaging, Kafka, or other integration patterns.
  • elaborating how requirements regarding security, availability, performance, scalability, privacy, manageability, and monitoring are realized.
  • Drafting ADDs, high-level designs, context diagrams, component diagrams, and system sequence diagrams in which information flows and system interactions are made transparent.
  • collaborating with software developers, lead developers, and platform teams to technically investigate and test solution directions.
  • aligning with business stakeholders, product owners, security specialists, and other solution and enterprise architects.
  • ensuring that solutions align with the architectural vision, security guidelines, cloud strategy, and technical standards of Schiphol.
  • substantiating architectural choices, for example, with Architecture Decision Records.
  • guiding solutions from the initial business question through to the technical elaboration and realization by the development team.

You look not only at the desired end state but also at the technical feasibility, existing systems, and the steps required to actually realize a solution. You are therefore not an architect who exclusively sets frameworks from a distance. You work actively with software developers, lead developers, platform teams, security specialists, and business representatives to investigate, test, and further concretize solution directions. You feel comfortable in technical discussions about, for example, Java applications, container platforms, REST APIs, webhooks, events, and messaging. You clearly document architectural choices in Architecture Definition Documents, Architecture viewpoints in the architecture repository, Architecture Decision Records, and other architectural products. In this way, you provide development teams with clear frameworks with which they can further design and realize solutions.
