Requirements

What we're looking for

• Bachelor's in Mechanical Engineering or Aerospace Engineering;

• Affinity/experience with composite materials and associated manufacturing processes;

• Experience with designing using 3D CAD programs such as Catia or SolidWorks;

• 2-5 years of experience with composite materials and associated manufacturing processes is a plus;

• Team spirit, result-orientedness, initiative, flexibility, and a sense of humor;

• Excellent communication skills in Dutch and English.

The role

Are you an enthusiastic Engineer (BSc.) who wants to work on the development of sustainable lightweight structures and associated manufacturing technology for composites? On your way to the next step in your career or a recent graduate? Do you want to work in a high-tech environment with state-of-the-art equipment? Then please read on!

What you'll do

Together with a motivated team of colleagues, you will work on the development of new innovative design and manufacturing concepts for lightweight and sustainable composite structures. You will draw up work instructions for manufacturing experiments, such as for pressing processes, the welding of thermoplastics, or for automated fiber placement of bio-based composite materials. Additionally, you will design tooling and molds, for example, program robot systems, or deal with the processing, interpretation, and reporting of research results. At the beginning of your career, you will be paired with a coach who will support you with advice and practical assistance.

What do we offer you?

Working at NLR means working in a national and international high-tech environment. Collaboration and involvement are highly valued by us. By giving you freedom and personal responsibility, you are best able to achieve groundbreaking innovations. Do you want to develop yourself both professionally and personally? That is also possible at NLR as a learning organization, supplemented by a training budget, a mentor, internal coaches, and good contacts with vocational, applied sciences, and universities.

In addition to all this, we offer you:

  • The opportunity to contribute to complex and socially relevant issues;

  • Sufficient holiday and ATV days (45 in total for full-time employment) for a good work-life balance;

  • An end-of-year bonus of 8%;

  • An allowance for your healthcare costs;

  • Extra paid parental leave;

  • The possibility to develop yourself with education and courses that match your ambitions.

Your new working environment

The Structures Technology department (39 employees) contributes to the development of lightweight civil and military structures and the sustainability of aviation through the use of high-tech materials and innovative manufacturing concepts.

We evaluate new materials, develop new design concepts and manufacturing techniques, where the focus lies on Automated Composites Manufacturing and Additive Manufacturing. In addition to physical experiments, we are also increasingly performing simulations of manufacturing processes and, together with other departments within NLR, developing smart digital representations of these processes (digital twins). With these activities, we strengthen the competitiveness of companies in the aerospace and defense industries and support defense tasks. Much of our research is conducted in collaboration with universities and companies. Our project teams are multidisciplinary and work in (inter)national partnerships. Depending on your experience and ambition, you may also lead such teams yourself as an Application Engineer.
