The role

Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UASs) play a central role in the modern threat landscape and represent the most recent threat to critical infrastructure in the Netherlands. At NLR, we advise our military and civil partners on how they can best protect themselves against this new threat, also known as Counter-UAS (C-UAS). Do you want to play a vital role in this? Then we are looking for you!

What you'll do

As an R&D Engineer C-UAS, your main responsibility is the development and integration of solutions for detecting and tracking unmanned aircraft using a wide range of heterogeneous sensors.

This includes combining different types of sensors, such as radar, optical, and acoustic sensors, to obtain a complete picture of the airspace.

Your duties consist of

  • collaborating with experts to optimize the interaction between different sensors and effectors, such as jamming equipment or other countermeasures;

  • Ensuring that various data streams work together seamlessly, so that a watertight and up-to-date operational picture is created through multi-sensor detection.

The goal is to develop an effective and efficient system capable of detecting, tracking, and potentially countering UASs, in order to safeguard airspace security.

Your activities include:

  • Developing and integrating heterogeneous sensors for the detection and tracking of UAVs;

  • Programming and configuring software for processing and analyzing sensor data;

  • Linking different sensors and systems to create an integrated solution for situational awareness and decision-making;

  • Testing and validating solutions in a practical environment;

  • Collaborating with experts to interpret and understand the results.

What do you bring?

  • A proactive and assertive attitude;

  • A completed WO Master's degree in a relevant technical field (e.g., aerospace engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, physics, or astronomy);

  • Affinity with programming (e.g., Python, C++, MATLAB) and experience with software development;

  • Experience with sensor fusion and its applications;

  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills;

  • Good communication skills and experience working in a team.
