The role
A good cost estimate is not a final product. It is information that enables a project team to make better choices. As Cost Engineer Greenfield Midden, you make visible what projects cost, where the uncertainties lie, and which choices have financial consequences. In this way, you help project teams to make well-founded decisions during the realization and expansion of high-voltage substations for the energy transition.
Within Greenfield Construct Substations Midden, you work closely on the projects. You ensure reliable cost information that allows project teams to make choices regarding time, money, scope, and risk. Not only by making good estimates, but also by explaining what lies behind them: what assumptions have been made, where the uncertainties are, and what happens if a project chooses a different solution?
As colleague Niek aptly puts it:
"For me, good cost engineering is not about spreadsheets. It is about enabling the right project decisions."
In the coming years, both the number and the complexity of our substation projects will grow. We therefore want to have insight into costs, uncertainties, and trends earlier and more consistently. We also want to be able to compare estimates better and visibly incorporate lessons from post-calculations into subsequent projects. You can have a direct influence on that.
What you'll do
- prepares transparent, realistic, and target-setting estimates and budgets and makes clear what they are based on;
- advises project teams on cost-technical trade-offs between time, money, scope, and risk;
- incorporates cost data from realized projects into post-calculations, so that we can use lessons from previous projects;
- contributes to requirement specifications and assesses tenders;
- assesses extra and reduction work and makes visible what this means for the project;
- analyzes deviations and helps to further improve our cost-engineering processes, standards, and working methods.
How you'll work
We work hybrid and find it important to seek each other out physically. Therefore, we work at least two days per week from Arnhem. Thursday is our fixed team day and the second office day is flexible. Where necessary, you will also visit project locations.
You do not yet need to know our substation projects and TenneT systems inside and out. However, we do consider experience with budgeting and estimating to be important. You can learn the rest with us. In addition, you bring:
competencies
To truly make a difference in this role, you recognize yourself in the following competencies:
- Managing complexity: you want to understand what lies behind an estimate. Are assumptions, risks, or consequences unclear? Then you ask questions and find out what is needed to get a complete picture.
- Quality of decisions: you bring together different information, interests, and scenarios and turn them into well-founded advice that the project team can use.
- Persuading: you dare to voice your advice and explain clearly how you arrived at that advice, even if others view it differently.
- You take responsibility for the quality and traceability of your estimates. You make uncertainties or deviations discussable in a timely manner and you actively follow up on agreements and actions. In your cost-technical trade-offs, you also take safety into account and do not accept solutions that put safe design, execution, or management under pressure.
