Generative AI Engineer

The first engineer in Strukton's AI team. Take over what is already there, determine how we build further.

Strukton uses AI to make the work of colleagues easier. The first applications are running in production, partly built with external partners. We are looking for a senior software engineer who understands generative AI well, brings this knowledge in-house, and builds what comes next together with the business.

A few examples of what is currently happening:

• Automatically reading specifications and contract documents, so that estimators and systems engineers start with a pre-filled baseline instead of a blank document;
• traceability as a hard requirement: every line that AI provides refers to the source, and the professional decides;
• moving from extraction to support further in the process, such as unlocking drawings and quotes, chatting about project documents, or pre-filling a budget.

Part of this is currently being built with external partners. You will take over solutions where applicable, make them manageable, and continue building. We will continue to use partners as a flexible shell, but you will safeguard technical choices, quality, and transferability.

What you do

• Design and build generative AI solutions using Python, LLMs, RAG, and agents, and bring them from the first version to production.
• Assess, take over, and further develop existing AI solutions from external parties.
• Understand the underlying problem of a business question and translate it into an appropriate technical solution.
• Build maintainable code, backend services, and API connections that fit into our Azure landscape.
• Systematically measure and improve the quality of AI output using test sets, evaluation criteria, and monitoring.
• Make technical choices explainable to colleagues without a technical background.

Our current technical environment includes Python, Azure OpenAI, Azure AI Foundry, Azure AI Search, Document Intelligence, RAG and agents, PostgreSQL, Container Apps, Terraform, and Azure DevOps with CI/CD.

We choose technology because it fits the problem and is manageable within our architecture.

You are the first engineer in our AI team and report to the Head of AI. That means two things.

You are the primary technical point of contact within the AI team. Within the frameworks of architecture and security, you will help determine which standards we use and how we build, test, and maintain generative AI in production.

Additionally, the team is still under construction. For now, you will combine new development and maintenance. As the team grows, we will determine together where your main focus will lie.

You will work closely with the more than 40 IT professionals at Strukton Netherlands, particularly Data & Integrations, Architecture, Cloud, and Security & Infra, and with the business that poses the questions.

• Demonstrable experience with professional Python development and with bringing software into production that is actually used.
• Practical experience with LLMs, RAG, agents, and evaluating AI output.
• Experience with Azure, such as Azure OpenAI and Azure AI Foundry, or a comparable cloud platform, backend development, and working with APIs and data sources.
• You have previously taken over code from others and made it manageable.
• You can explain technical choices clearly to architecture, security, and business, and you feel comfortable in an environment where you provide your own structure and direction.

Experience with document intelligence or production management of AI applications is a plus.

The role is intended for a senior engineer. Do you currently still see yourself as a medior, but have demonstrably built production solutions independently and taken over existing codebases? Then we also invite you to respond.
