What we're looking for
You have completed professional legal training (BO) and have 4 to 10 years of relevant work experience; as a lawyer or (partially) built up in a comparable field, such as at a government agency, project developer, or consultancy firm.
You have demonstrable experience with energy law, preferably with a focus on the regulatory aspects (tariff and access regulation and the legal aspects of generation, storage, transport, and supply of energy) and/or the drafting and negotiating of energy contracts such as PPA, transport, connection, and supply agreements.
You have knowledge of relevant laws and regulations such as the Energy Act, the (upcoming) Collective Heat Act, and EU regulations in the field of renewable energy, or you are motivated to master this knowledge quickly.
Experience with litigation in the field of energy, for example disputes regarding tariffs, connections, or supervision by energy regulators, is a plus.
You actively follow the relevant (European and national) developments in energy law and know how to translate them into practical advice for clients.
You think entrepreneurially: you are not only strong in substance, but also actively think along about the development of the team and the growth of your client portfolio.
You possess excellent communication skills in Dutch and English, both orally and in writing.
You are a true team player and know how to inspire your colleagues.
Nice to have
You are curious about the possibilities of legal AI and see it as an opportunity, not a threat. AKD is at the forefront of the application of AI in legal practice — you will contribute ideas on how we use those tools to serve clients even better.
The role
Our energy group wants to make an impact in the transition to a sustainable energy supply. We are looking for a new colleague who also finds that appealing. Are you an energy law lawyer with ambition and a nose for innovation? Come strengthen the fastest-growing legal field in the Netherlands at one of the leading firms in this area: AKD. A firm that not only leads the way in energy law, but also in the application of legal AI in legal practice.
What you'll do
As an associate lawyer in energy law, you will take a central role at the intersection of litigation, advisory, and contracting, in a sector that is constantly in motion. Your activities include, among others:
Energy regulation: you advise clients, such as energy companies, governments, housing corporations, and project developers, on energy regulation. Think of the Energy Act, the upcoming Collective Heat Act, and EU regulations in the field of renewable energy. You translate these developments into concrete advice for your clients.
Energy projects: you lead the contract formation for large sustainable energy projects. In doing so, you work on a wide range of agreements: cooperation, PPA, transport, operation, construction, connection, and supply agreements. You safeguard the legal quality and steer negotiations where necessary.
Litigation: you represent the interests of clients in disputes regarding energy projects and energy regulation, for example in tariff and connection disputes or enforcement cases by regulators.
Knowledge development and sharing: you actively contribute to the knowledge base of your team and parties active in the energy sector. This includes, among other things, via our Energy Magazine and our Chronicles in the field of heat and solar energy. Together with us, you will build a visible external profile through publications, annotations, lectures, teaching, and participation in working groups.
You will work closely with Keesjan Meijering and other colleagues in the Energy team, including specialists in the fields of administrative law, real estate, and environmental law. Together, you will bring energy projects to a successful conclusion from an integrated public-private law perspective.
The energy transition demands legal expertise of the highest level. As an associate lawyer, you are not only an advisor, but also a co-driver of solutions for one of the greatest societal challenges of our time. Your work contributes directly to the realization of projects that help the Netherlands meet its climate goals.

Application process
The selection process at AKD lasts a maximum of one month and consists of interviews, an assessment, and a pre-employment screening. You can find more information about this on our website.
The location is not leading: our team is active from Amsterdam, Rotterdam, and Eindhoven, and we do not mind which office you start from, or even a combination thereof. We will determine this together, depending on your preferences, experience, and the needs of the practice.
