The role

Contribute to the development of the port of tomorrow

The Port of Rotterdam faces major challenges. The energy transition, the growing demand for space, and the ambition to remain a sustainable and competitive port require thoughtful choices in the development of the Port Industrial Complex.

As an Area Development Advisor, you will work together with experienced colleagues on the spatial development of the Port Industrial Complex. You will bring together spatial, commercial, and social interests and support area developments with analyses, advice, and substantiated proposals. In this way, you contribute directly to a future-proof port.

Are you a curious and entrepreneurial professional who gets energy from area development, collaboration, analysis, and connecting people, knowledge, and interests? Then we would love to meet you.

What you'll do

As an Area Development Advisor, you will work on the development of parts of the Port Industrial Complex. You will map out opportunities, bottlenecks, and developments and translate these into analyses, advice, and concrete proposals.

You work at the intersection of spatial development, commerce, and sustainability. In doing so, you switch between strategic issues and practical implementation and work together with colleagues from various disciplines.

Specifically, you will be involved in:

  • Contributing to area visions and area strategies for parts of the Port Industrial Complex.
  • Performing location scans in which spatial, commercial, social, and sustainability interests are weighed.
  • Identifying development opportunities, area issues, and improvement initiatives and translating these into concrete proposals.
  • Combining spatial data, GIS information, market insights, and other relevant data sources to support decision-making.
  • Coordinating information flows and bringing together insights from different disciplines.
  • Collaborating with internal and external stakeholders to realize shared goals.
  • Representing Port of Rotterdam in conversations with customers, governments, partners, and other stakeholders.

What makes you successful?

  • Collaborating and connecting: You bring people, knowledge, and interests together and know how to convert different perspectives into collective results.
  • Ownership and result-orientation: You take responsibility for your work, advance ideas, and ensure that plans are converted into concrete results. You maintain focus on agreements made and deliver a visible contribution to shared goals.
  • Flexibility and resilience: You continue to function effectively in an environment that is constantly in motion. You can deal with uncertainty, adapt your approach when circumstances change, and keep an eye on the ultimate goal.
  • Organizational sensitivity: You understand how different interests converge within and outside the organization. You switch smoothly between strategic outlines and operational details and know when to involve which stakeholders.
  • Working analytically, data-driven, and process-oriented: You bring structure to complex issues and use data, analyses, and various information sources to make developments insightful and to support decision-making. You have an eye for processes, information flows, and work agreements and know how to translate insights into concrete actions and advice.

Hiring process

In addition to your CV, we ask you to answer the three questions below. This gives us a better picture of your experience, way of working, and potential for this position. Preferably use a concrete example from your own practice and describe the situation, your role, the actions you took, and the result achieved. For each question, you can use a maximum of 250 words .

  • Question 1: Describe a situation in which you had to collaborate with different parties or stakeholders who did not all have the same interest. What was your role, what challenges did you encounter, and how did you contribute to a collective result?

  • Question 2: Give an example of an issue or project where the direction was not yet fully established and you took the initiative to move this forward. How did you bring structure, what choices did you make, and what was the final result?

  • Question 3: Describe a situation in which you used information from different sources, such as data, analyses, reports, or input from stakeholders, to substantiate an issue or support a decision. How did you collect and analyze the information, and what was the outcome?

  • An integrity investigation and online screening are part of the selection procedure. Valicare performs this screening on behalf of Port of Rotterdam.
