Deputy Editor-in-Chief
Can you maintain an overview and look ahead in the middle of a busy news organization? Do you see which stories matter, know how to connect people and teams, and do you dare to make journalistic choices? Omroep Gelderland is looking for a deputy editor-in-chief who ensures that the journalistic course is visible every day in the stories of Omroep Gelderland.
As deputy editor-in-chief, you form the editorial management of Omroep Gelderland together with the editor-in-chief. You are the second person in the journalistic leadership and focus primarily on the daily journalistic operation. You monitor the journalistic flow, look ahead to the weekly planning, drive important original stories, and ensure cohesion between teams and channels.
You ensure that journalistic plans are actually implemented. You bring structure and priority, monitor the progress of projects, and hold colleagues accountable for agreements and responsibilities made. In doing so, you stimulate ownership and solution-oriented working within the newsroom.
In the absence of the editor-in-chief, you assume their role.
You maintain a broad editorial view of our journalism. Are there sufficient original stories? Are important topics followed up on? Are choices being made that fit the course, and is Omroep Gelderland reaching its various target audiences with them?
You give managing editors space to take their own responsibility, but you look at the whole from the editorial management perspective. If broad journalistic choices are needed as a newsroom, you provide direction and make the final decision where necessary.
· monitoring the journalistic flow and steering based on the weekly planning;
· driving large, original, and overarching stories and ensuring these are translated into concrete results;
· monitoring journalistic cohesion and continuity;
· directing the planning, progress, and execution of large projects and events, such as elections, the Vierdaagse, and the Zwarte Cross;
· connecting editorial teams and supporting departments, setting priorities, and ensuring that agreements, responsibilities, and deadlines are met;
· stimulating colleagues to take ownership, fulfill agreements, and come up with solutions themselves when something can be improved;
· providing direct leadership to colleagues in our Multiteam who are deployed flexibly for projects and leave;
· being part of the Editorial Policy Team;
· replacing the editor-in-chief during their absence.
· a key position in the journalistic leadership of Omroep Gelderland;
· much influence on the daily journalism and the development of the newsroom;
· space to continue building the journalistic course together with the editor-in-chief;
· an organization that is fully in development and in which you can truly make a difference;
We are looking for an experienced journalistic leader who combines substantive sharpness with organization & decisiveness. You have a solid journalistic background and extensive leadership experience. You understand what a modern news organization needs and know what different channels and target audiences require from our journalism.
· is journalistically sharp and quickly sees which stories are relevant and distinctive;
· maintains an overview and looks ahead, even when the daily news pressure is high, and sets clear priorities in doing so;
· works project-based and steers result-oriented: you translate plans into concrete actions, monitor progress, and ensure that agreements and deadlines are met;
· is clear and stays on course: you stick to choices made collectively, dare to address colleagues when agreements are not met, and make it discussable what behavior is needed to achieve results together;
· stimulates ownership: you place responsibility where it belongs, encourage colleagues to think for themselves and propose solutions, and prevent issues from being unnecessarily passed on;
· provides connecting leadership and empowers people, without taking over their responsibilities;
· understands how media usage is changing and what this means for journalism;
· radiates calm and authority and also communicates clearly under pressure, makes decisions, and brings others along in those decisions.
