The role

At De Vries Scheepsbouw Makkum, we build exceptional Feadships. These are world-class yachts, fully custom-made and perfectly finished. From our modern shipyard on the IJsselmeer, we proudly work on projects up to 120 meters. Every detail counts, and everyone's craftsmanship contributes to the final result. Together, we realize yachts that garner admiration worldwide. That is your contribution to the construction of a Feadship.

What you'll do

Your work takes place in two locations: in the workshop and on board our new build yachts. It begins in the workshop; components returning from the painter or from production are further assembled by you. You assemble doors and hatches. You install locking mechanisms, hinges, and hardware. You ensure everything is ready for installation on board. Sometimes you perform small metalworking tasks, such as drilling or adjusting steel or aluminum structures.

Next, you go on board; this is where the real precision work begins. You place fire doors, sliding doors, watertight and weather-tight doors, and frames in exactly the right position. You install steel and aluminum frames. You work from positional and working drawings. In this way, you ensure everything fits perfectly with the interior that will be installed later. In a subsequent construction phase, you readjust all doors and hatches. They must close smoothly, be exactly in line with the finish, and function fully as water- or fire-resistant. This requires patience, technical insight, and above all, great accuracy. A laser is regularly used during this process to bring everything into the exact position.

It is not production work where every day is the same. Of course, you follow fixed processes, but every yacht is unique. That means constantly thinking, checking, measuring, and adjusting. You work closely with other disciplines within production, meaning the work is tightly integrated. When a door is not in the exact position, it has consequences for the finishing work of multiple departments. Therefore, we are looking for someone who works calmly, has an eye for detail, and is only satisfied when everything is correct.

This is what you will do as a Doors & Hatches Fitter

Perhaps you currently work as a metalworker and want to move from heavy work to finer assembly. Or perhaps you are a carpenter and find it appealing to apply the same precision, but in steel and aluminum. We find your attitude more important than your current job title.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Likes working with his/her hands;
  • Is accurate and meticulous;
  • Can read technical drawings;
  • Has an affinity with metal and assembly;
  • Is physically fit and enjoys working on board;
  • Collaborates well, but also takes independent responsibility.

Experience in yacht building is a plus, but certainly not a hard requirement. Experience with lasers is also an advantage. Have you not done that yet? Then we will ensure that you learn it.

What you bring

Working at De Vries Scheepsbouw means working at the absolute top of the Dutch manufacturing industry. You will be given the space to develop yourself and become increasingly specialized within a unique field.

You can count on:

  • A salary between € 2,900 and € 4,000 gross per month, matching your knowledge and experience.
  • 40 days off per year (27 vacation days plus 13 ATV days) with full-time employment.
  • A net travel allowance of € 0.25 per kilometer.
  • A full-time employment contract of 40 hours per week;
  • Working within a historic family business with a rich history in yacht building;
  • Plenty of variety between the workshop and activities on board;
  • The opportunity to further develop yourself, for example in working with lasers and specialist assembly techniques;
  • A working environment where you collaborate a lot and feel connected to colleagues. You will notice this, for example, through the active staff association and the various activities throughout the year.
