Role description:

In the coming years, ProRail is investing heavily in the railway. New stations, ERTMS, track expansions, energy issues, and replacement tasks demand a reliable and future-proof underground infrastructure. Cable systems for train signaling, power supply, telecommunications, and other rail-related installations form an essential part of the railway network.

As a Junior Underground Infrastructure Rail Engineer, you will work on the design, coordination, and further development of this infrastructure. You will be involved in projects from the planning study phase through to realization and will work together with specialists from disciplines such as train signaling, track design, power supply, overhead lines, and systems engineering. This integral collaboration aligns with the way of working within our rail projects.

What makes this position special is that the field is rapidly evolving. Where engineering used to primarily revolve around producing drawings and designs, the focus is increasingly shifting towards the smart application of data, digital models, and asset information. That is why we actively invest in digitalization, model-based engineering, BIM, GIS, and Systems Engineering. But we still do this with specialist technical knowledge as our foundation.

As a result, you will develop not only as an engineer but also increasingly as an advisor who helps clients make substantiated choices based on reliable information, data analyses, and integral considerations. The engineer of the future does not just design, but also advises on the full lifecycle of rail assets and connects different technical disciplines.

Business Unit Rail Signaling:

You are part of a multidisciplinary rail team in which specialists in the field of train signaling and underground infrastructure work closely together, but you also work with specialists from other technical disciplines. It is precisely at the interfaces between cable infrastructure, track design, power supply, and train signaling that the most interesting technical challenges arise.

Within our projects, we combine classic engineering-oriented techniques with innovative digital solutions. This gives you the opportunity to help build the next generation of rail projects, in which data, digital twins, asset management, and model-based engineering are becoming increasingly important.

What you'll do

Role responsibilities:

Your activities include, among others:

  • Preparing and elaborating designs for underground rail infrastructure;
  • Collecting, analyzing, and managing cable and asset data;
  • Collaborating on integral track designs together with disciplines such as train signaling, power supply, track, and overhead lines;
  • Applying BIM, GIS, and Systems Engineering within projects;
  • Coordinating technical information between various stakeholders;
  • Supporting technical studies, design considerations, and risk analyses;
  • Contributing to the further digitalization of design and engineering processes;
  • Preparing technical documentation and contract documents;
  • Thinking along about innovative ways to better utilize asset information and digital models within rail projects.

Qualifications & Experience

Additionally, we increasingly work together with international Arcadis teams. Depending on your ambitions, this offers opportunities to also gain experience within international rail projects.
