Role description
What happens beneath the city when we make different choices above ground?
New housing, more greenery, heavy showers, and longer periods of drought all place a claim on the subsurface. Within the professional theme of 'urban groundwater', you will make what happens there visible and translate your analyses into choices that are truly feasible in the city.
You will work on groundwater issues in existing cities and new area developments. Using measurement data, infiltration tests, and models, you will answer concrete questions: can rainwater soak into the soil here, how do we prevent groundwater nuisance or desiccation, and which groundwater level suits future use? You connect soil, groundwater, design, and management via the principle of water and soil guidance and translate your analysis into well-founded choices.
To do this, you connect groundwater directly to the city's drainage. You investigate how storage, infiltration (delayed discharge), and discharge complement each other, during extreme precipitation as well as during smaller showers throughout the year. In this way, you look at the underground sponge effect and utilize precipitation where possible for groundwater recharge and greenery, and you determine where drainage or discharge is needed for a climate-resilient city during high groundwater levels.
In this way, your contribution is not limited to a calculation or report. You discuss your advice and results with the client and see your advice reflected in choices regarding construction levels, greenery, water storage, infiltration, drainage, and discharge - and ultimately in a feasible and manageable design for a neighborhood, street, or area.
Role responsibilities:
Depending on your experience and the complexity of the questions, you will work independently or together with experienced colleagues.
Your responsibilities will include
- researching and analyzing groundwater nuisance issues, including determining measures;
- determining and assessing groundwater levels, dewatering depth, and infiltration opportunities;
- assessing the effects of changing groundwater levels on buildings, foundations, infrastructure, and urban greenery;
- preparing infiltration calculations and water balances and translating them into design principles;
- advising on groundwater monitoring networks and drainage and infiltration facilities;
- performing and advising on dewatering calculations;
- setting up, using, and assessing groundwater models for urban issues;
- preparing water management plans for area developments and redesigns;
- developing integrated choices for the storage, infiltration, and discharge of precipitation, during extreme as well as everyday showers;
- clearly explaining the consequences for buildings, infrastructure, greenery, and public space to clients and colleagues.
As a starter, you will build your professional knowledge and advisory skills, guided by experienced colleagues. From that role, you will grow with your experience toward independently performing analyses, providing advice, and maintaining client contact.
Advisory group and team:
This role lies exactly at the interface of the Groundwater and Urban Water teams. Depending on your profile, work distribution, and location, you will be assigned to one of these two teams. In your projects, you will work together with colleagues from both teams.
Both teams fall under the Water and Climate Adaptation advisory group. Working from this advisory group, you will collaborate with specialists at home and abroad. Within clear frameworks, you choose your own direction for growth: deepening your professional expertise, becoming stronger in design and advice, or taking more responsibility for clients, projects, and colleagues.
Qualifications & Experience:
We are not looking for a fixed profile and do not expect you to have mastered everything already. More important is that your knowledge, way of collaborating, and direction of development fit our projects and the Groundwater and Urban Water teams.
Specifically, we request:
- You have a completed HBO or WO degree, for example in civil engineering, water management, (geo)hydrology, earth sciences, or a similar field.
- You have an affinity with urban groundwater, infiltration, drainage, and/or groundwater modeling; relevant work experience is welcome, but not required.
- You work analytically and carefully, with an eye for the practical applicability of your advice.
- You like to maintain an overview and can explain technical insights in an understandable way.
- You have a good command of the Dutch language, both spoken and written.
