The role

Every day, more than 3,500 passionate professionals dedicate themselves at the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (AVL) to one shared ambition: to better understand, better treat, and ultimately cure cancer. The AVL is unique in the Netherlands. As a specialized oncological hospital and an internationally leading research institute under one roof, new scientific insights are directly translated into daily patient care. That makes working at the AVL special: you contribute not only to the best care of today, but also to the treatments of tomorrow.

At the AVL, people are central. Naturally, this includes the patient, but also the professional. The organization invests heavily in development, collaboration, and innovation. Employees are given the space to take initiative, continue to develop themselves, and build the care of the future together.

The operating room complex is a dynamic and high-tech environment where complex oncological surgeries take place daily. Approximately 100 professionals work closely together within the OR complex. There are twelve operating rooms, nine of which are currently in use, three robotic ORs, and a special operating room for intraoperative radiotherapy. Surgeons, anesthesiologists, surgical assistants, anesthesia technicians, recovery nurses, and support disciplines work here as one team, with short lines of communication and a shared focus on the best possible patient care.

Due to continuous developments within oncological care and the changing labor market, the OR complex faces an exciting developmental challenge in the coming years. How do you organize a future-proof operating complex? How do you continue to invest in a work environment in which professionals continue to develop, collaborate with pleasure, and get the best out of themselves every day? And how do you utilize innovations to make care even better?

As Operating Room Team Leader, you play an important role in this development.

What you'll do

Together with the operations manager, the medical manager, and your fellow team leaders, you provide integrated leadership to the OR complex. You are collectively responsible for the quality of care, the employees, and the further development of the department.

You are visible on the work floor and know what is happening. You create the necessary conditions so that employees can provide optimal care every day. You are coach, sparring partner, and manager at the same time. You stimulate ownership, support employees in their development, and ensure a safe, professional, and enjoyable working environment.

In addition to this people-oriented role, you are responsible for the daily operations of your area of focus. Together with fellow team leaders and day coordinators, you ensure the optimal organization of the operating rooms. You maintain an overview, monitor progress, and dare to make choices that contribute to an efficient and high-quality operating room organization.

You are responsible for, among other things:

  • The daily management of employees within the OR complex

  • HRM, including performance, development, absenteeism management, and sustainable employability

  • Staff and capacity planning

  • An efficient use of people and resources, aligned with the OR planning

  • Monitoring and improving quality, safety, and work processes

  • Initiating and guiding improvement and change processes

  • Preparing the department for future developments and innovations.

In doing so, you explicitly look beyond daily operations. Together with fellow team leaders, you make an active contribution to the direction of the cluster, quality improvement, and hospital-wide projects. In this way, you help build an innovative, future-proof operating room and the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek of tomorrow.

At the Antoni van Leeuwenhoek, we all commit to the same goal: the best care for every patient and every type of cancer. That is no small feat. But not impossible. Here, science and care work together on innovation. Time and again, we find new ways that help people with cancer worldwide. Here we save lives, we win time and quality.

Requirements

You are an accessible and connecting leader who knows how to bring people along in change. You combine organizational sensitivity with decisiveness and are able to connect operational issues with strategic developments. You create calm, instill confidence, and stimulate collaboration within a complex and dynamic environment.

In addition, you possess:

  • HBO (higher professional education) level of work and thinking

  • Management experience within healthcare, for example within the OR, anesthesia, Intensive Care, or Emergency Care

  • Experience within the OR or anesthesia is a plus

  • A completed management degree

  • An organization-wide perspective and the ability to collaborate across departments;

  • Excellent communication skills and a coaching leadership style.
