What you'll get

TenneT offers you the opportunity to contribute to a sustainable energy future. Together with colleagues, partners, and stakeholders, you work on innovative solutions that make the energy transition possible. With us, you get the space to develop your talent and work in an environment where your growth is central. We encourage initiative and give you the space to come up with new ideas.

We therefore offer you with full-time employment:

  • A permanent contract with a two-month probationary period, based on 32 - 40 hours per week.
  • A salary in scale 8 or 9 with 8% holiday allowance and 6% end-of-year bonus.
  • A solid pension via ABP: we pay 70% of your premium.
  • 43 leave days per year.
  • Hybrid working where possible, including a travel, internet, and home office allowance.
  • Support for your vitality, with a contribution towards a sports subscription and health insurance, and our Always Energy program.
  • Development opportunities via the TenneT Academy, so that you can continue to expand your knowledge and skills.

The role

Keeping the Netherlands running, that is our mission. How will you make the Netherlands CO2-neutral?

As a Data Engineer, you will help build reliable data foundations for the electricity system of the future, so that the Netherlands can complete the transition to a reliable CO2-neutral electricity supply. As a Data Engineer Market Analysis, you will ensure that the electricity grid remains future-proof and in this way contribute to a stable and sustainable energy system.

What you'll do

As a Data Engineer Market Analysis, you are responsible for, among other things:

  • Designing, building, and maintaining prototype ETL/ELT pipelines for market simulations and energy system analyses.
  • Processing, cleaning, combining, and validating large datasets from internal and external sources;
  • Automating data processing, quality controls, logging, and monitoring surrounding model input and model output;
  • Setting up and managing structured datasets, data models, and documentation so that analyses are reproducible and traceable;
  • Collaborating with market analysis experts, modelers, and data scientists to create prototype data solutions and draft requirements for further development by the relevant DevOps teams;
  • Supporting the preparation, execution, and analysis of market simulations using tools such as PLEXOS, PyPSA, the ETM, or comparable models;
  • Contributing to standardization, version control, testing, CI/CD, and best practices within the data and modeling chain;
  • Identifying opportunities for improvement in existing processes, tooling, and data quality.

We are looking for someone who gets energy from reliable data, smart automation, and improving analytical processes. You do not need to be an expert in energy markets or energy system scenarios from day one, but you are curious about the domain and find it interesting to build technical data solutions that support societal decision-making.

What you bring

  • A completed university degree (WO) in, for example, data science, computer science, engineering, econometrics, mathematics, or a related field;
  • Knowledge of ETL/ELT processes, data modeling, data warehouses, data lakes, or modern cloud data platforms.
  • Demonstrable hands-on experience (preferably >3 years) with Python, SQL, Databricks, Azure, and/or PowerBI for data processing, analysis, visualization, and automation.
  • Familiarity with version control and software engineering principles, such as Git, testing, code reviews, and CI/CD.
  • Affinity with energy systems, electricity markets, optimization models, and/or simulation models is a strong plus.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, in English and preferably also in Dutch.

To truly make a difference in this role, you recognize yourself in the following competencies:

  • You are curious and eager to learn;
  • You have a proactive and result-oriented attitude, and an analytical, structured, and quality-oriented way of working.
  • You have the ability to work effectively both autonomously and in a team;
  • You communicate clearly and to the point, and are able to explain technical solutions clearly to colleagues with different backgrounds.

About the company & team

Where will you end up?

You will be working in the 'Design' business unit within the Market Analysis Team, where we shape the energy transition. We design the climate-neutral energy system of the future, analyze what is required for that, and plan the necessary infrastructure. Within this business unit, the Market Analysis team of 18 people investigates and analyzes the expected changes in electricity supply and demand in the short term (2026-2035) and long term (2035-2050) and the consequences thereof for TenneT's tasks in the fields of electricity transmission, grid management, and market facilitation.

The team's activities consist of the development and quantification of scenarios for the energy system, modeling of market behavior and economic feasibility, stochastic calculation of uncertainties, and assessment of security of supply. Important products that the team delivers / contributes to are: security of supply studies at national and European levels (Monitor Voorzieningszekerheid, ERAA); market simulations and system optimizations for infrastructure planning (investment plan, TYNDP, Target Grid); and modeling and quantification for various ad-hoc explorations and impact analyses.

With all this, we provide indispensable information for strategic decisions by TenneT and important stakeholders such as the Dutch government.

This team is responsible, among other things, for creating scenarios for the energy system of the future and performing analyses and market simulations on how that system could function. This lays the foundation to be able to answer all kinds of infrastructure-related questions (such as where nuclear power plants can best be located, and what this means for the electricity grid).

In this role, you ensure that large and diverse datasets become available in a reliable, efficient, and reproducible manner for analyses, model runs, and decision-making regarding the energy system of the future. You support analysts, modelers, and subject matter experts by collecting, structuring, transforming, validating, and making data available. Think of market data, climate data, scenario assumptions, network information, and results from simulation models. You connect different internal and external models with each other, and ensure that scenario and simulation data flows smoothly and reliably between models without manual interventions.

From within the team, you are also the connecting link with relevant DevOps teams at TenneT's Digital & Technology Transformation department. In this way, you ensure that what you set up aligns with broader TenneT IT standards and development principles, and that your prototypes can be successfully brought into production by them.

With all this, you play a key role in accelerating and scaling up our analyses and thereby creating well-founded insights upon which TenneT and the Dutch government can base important choices for the future energy system.
