What we're looking for

A bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering (or Naval Architecture with a strong mechanical component);
Substantive knowledge of:
- Mechanics, structural design, and strength;
- Good knowledge of the supplier market;
- Mechanical systems (propulsion, engine rooms, HVAC, hydraulics);
- Material usage, equipment integration, and systems engineering;
Experience with design, calculation, or CAD/CAE software (SolidWorks, Rhino, FEM tools, calculation packages);
Conceptual thinking ability and technical insight to evaluate multiple solution directions;
Ability to communicate technical choices clearly to both engineers and non-technical stakeholders;
Good command of Dutch and English;

Please note: A VOG (Certificate of Conduct) and the ability to obtain and maintain the required security clearance are mandatory for this position. A relevant screening is part of the selection process.

Nice to have

Interest in (or experience with) maritime or Defence projects is a strong plus.

The role

Do you have a background in Mechanical Engineering and want to apply your technical expertise to challenging Defence projects? Do you get energy from designing, analyzing, and developing technical concepts that ultimately grow into complete maritime systems? Then this role is written for you.

As a Design & Proposal Engineer Defence, you are the technical engine in the pre-contractual phase. You work on ships and equipment where mechanical systems, structural issues, drive lines, hydraulics, engine rooms, electrical integration, and performance requirements all come together. You translate customer requirements into a well-thought-out technical design, substantiate choices with calculations, and work closely with our Cost Estimators, Sales, and engineering teams.

This is a role in which you can apply both your technical depth and your analytical and communicative skills.

What you'll do

You are the primary technical point of contact during the tender phase and clearly map out the mechanical aspects of a design;
You develop conceptual designs for ships and installations in which mechanics, structural strength, hydrodynamics, and system integration are central;
You assess customer requirements for technical feasibility and translate these into a concrete design, including structural and mechanical choices;
You specify and source installations and equipment in an international playing field;
You work closely with cost estimators to substantiate your design with calculations (weight, power, stability, structural strength, equipment selections);
You build convincing technical storylines for Sales and customers, in which you present complex mechanical solutions in an understandable way;
You think proactively about new concepts and innovations for the Defence portfolio, for example in the field of system integration, performance improvement, and sustainability solutions.
