Structural Engineer / Design Engineer Formwork and Auxiliary Structures

• HBO or WO working and thinking level in the direction of civil engineering, architecture, or structural engineering;

• At least 5 years of experience as a structural engineer, design engineer, or similar within civil engineering;

• Experience with the design and calculation of temporary structures, formwork, or auxiliary structures;

• Experience with SCIA Engineer or similar calculation software;

• Knowledge of 3D modeling, for example in Revit, is a plus;

• Strong analytical skills and enjoyment in solving complex technical problems;

• The ability to discuss technical solutions clearly with both engineers and execution teams.

Within Ballast Nedam Infra Projects, you will work on the most complex infrastructure projects in the Netherlands. Think of bridges, tunnels, civil engineering structures, maritime constructions, and large-scale tenders. As a Senior Structural Engineer/ Design Engineer Formwork and Auxiliary Structures, you are the specialist in the field of temporary structures, formwork, and support structures.

You work on various projects within Ballast Nedam Infra and are involved from the tender phase through to execution, contributing ideas regarding construction methodologies, execution strategies, and technical solutions. In doing so, you analyze complex issues and perform structural calculations to arrive at safe, efficient, and economically viable designs. Solving challenging technical puzzles gives you energy.

Working with various project teams, you will work (both domestically and abroad) at different project locations. At the head office in Utrecht, on the project currently ALSEEN A27 Houten, the Hooipolder office in Gorinchem, or at one of the chain / LNG Jetty Brunsbuttel locations or in Werkendam. Additionally, working from home is possible in consultation.

The core of your work lies in the design and calculation of formwork and auxiliary structures, such as temporary steel and timber structures. In doing so, you work with, among others, 3D SCIA Engineer (scaffolding) or equivalent software. You are familiar with advanced structural analyses. You assess not only whether a design is structurally sound, but also whether it can be realized in an executable, manufacturable, and efficient manner.

What distinguishes this function from many other engineering roles is the close collaboration with work preparation / execution. You do not just sit behind your desk, but regularly team up with site managers, work preparers, modelers, and suppliers. Together with the team, you determine which solution works best both technically and practically. In doing so, you take into account safety, planning, costs, material usage, and feasibility.

Within the team, you fulfill an important substantive role. You share your knowledge with colleagues, mentor less experienced engineers, and contribute to the further development of the field within Ballast Nedam. In doing so, you work closely with Ballast Nedam Materieel in Almere, which has its own timber and steel workshops, to utilize our own formwork as much as possible.

A summary of your activities:

• Designing and calculating formwork, temporary steel structures, and auxiliary structures;

• Performing complex structural analyses and second-order calculations in SCIA Engineer;

• Advising on construction methodologies and execution strategies during tender and project phases;

• Preparing technical calculations, reports, and structural substantiations;

• Brainstorming with site managers, work preparers, modelers, and suppliers about the best technical solution;

• Guiding and coaching less experienced engineers within the field;

• Contributing to safe, innovative, and executable solutions for complex infra projects.
