Requirements

What we're looking for

  • You have a nautical background (education and/or experience in the maritime sector) and, in addition, you are willing to work in a continuous roster.
  • You are the point of contact and the visiting card of the Harbor Master; therefore, it is important that you are communicatively strong in Dutch and preferably also in English.
  • We attach great importance to flexibility in combination with a good balance between work and private life.

The role

Are you able to receive and assess requests for berths and shipping notifications in an efficient and effective manner? Can you take responsibility for adequately informing all internal and external parties about vessel visits? Do you enjoy advising and assisting port users also at night and during unsocial hours, to enforce legislation and actively advise during incidents? Then you are the candidate to come and strengthen our team as an Assistant Duty Officer and make your contribution to a safe Port of Rotterdam.

What you'll do

As an Assistant Duty Officer, you work in the front office of the Port Coordination Center (HCC) in a team of approximately 5 colleagues. Together, you are responsible for the execution of various activities in the field of planning, admission, and notifications of shipping in the Port of Rotterdam. Ranging from answering questions, issuing requests and permits, to receiving incident reports and checking vessel visits against the admission policy. As an Assistant Duty Officer, you are responsible for, among other things:

  • Assessing and issuing exemptions applicable to the Port Bye-laws. For example, you might receive a repair request from an agent to carry out repair work on a tanker in the oil port.
  • Checking whether a voyage can be made smoothly and safely based on currents, water levels, and the dimensions of the vessel. In this, you have a lot of contact with agencies, service providers, and other stakeholders in the port.
  • All incoming information is checked by you against the regulations for order and safety within the nautical management area of the Harbor Master. A loader makes a request to perform transshipment between shore and ship; as an Assistant Duty Officer, you look at where this can take place and how it can be done in a safe manner.
  • Receiving incident reports. These can be various reports, such as when a bunker hose breaks during bunkering between two ships and oil ends up in the water. As an Assistant Duty Officer, you ensure that the right people or emergency services are informed as quickly as possible and assist the back office (Duty Officer) in handling the incident.

In addition, we are continuously working on optimizing our HCC. Whether this is about digitizing our work more or streamlining processes more. For instance, we are currently working on introducing a specialization within the role. So that there is more focus on supervision and enforcement from the Supervision specialization, or rather more focus on nautical tasks and incidents from the Traffic specialization. As an Assistant Duty Officer, we expect you to think along about how we can achieve this goal by sharing your ideas and, where necessary, participating in working groups to realize these ideas. You work closely with the Duty Officer and Operational Manager; you receive a lot of freedom in your activities, while simultaneously, when the situation calls for it, the hierarchy will be leading in making (ad hoc) decisions. In some cases, it is important to proceed to action or intervention immediately.

What can you expect from your training.

You will start with an internal training program that we divide into three areas of focus:

When you start in your role as ADO, you begin with a 3-week training where you receive the necessary knowledge in a classroom setting; afterwards, you apply the knowledge you have acquired in practice under the guidance of an experienced colleague. Think of knowledge regarding laws and regulations in the port. After approximately 6 months, you will be further trained in the next area of focus, which is also a combination of theory (classroom) and practice. Finally, you will focus more on the Supervision or Traffic specialization by gaining knowledge in areas such as Tide-gate calculations, assessments of EMAS (Electronic Reporting of Waste from Shipping), or by mastering Transport Assessments. Naturally, we take your previously acquired knowledge and experience into account, which can influence the speed of your training program.

What will you do?

  • Control Room
  • Admission Policy
  • Traffic/Supervision Specialization

What do we offer you?

  • Great colleagues: With us, you not only work together with great colleagues, but you also enjoy (if you wish) a vibrant social life outside of working hours thanks to our diverse and active employee networks.
  • Attractive, independent position: Own initiative is encouraged and your impact is immediately noticeable. This is your chance to make a legendary contribution to the largest port in Europe.
  • Training and development opportunities: An extensive choice of training and courses to further develop yourself. You smart, we smarter!
  • Vitality and well-being: Discount on your gym membership and fresh fruit at the workplace. Stay fit and feel like a legend.
  • Competitive salary: Depending on your education and experience, we offer a salary between € 3,478 and € 4,153 gross per month based on 33.6 hours per week in continuous shift work, with growth opportunities up to € 5,191 gross per month, excluding a 30% irregularity allowance in continuous shift work and any future CAO increases.
  • Travel allowance: Whether you travel by car, bicycle, or (first class) public transport, we provide an appropriate reimbursement.
  • Flexible compensation budget: 19.6% on top of your gross monthly salary, composed of holiday allowance (8%), thirteenth month (8.33%), vitality contribution (2.3%), and an extra budget (0.97%). You can have this budget paid out periodically or use it for, for example, a bicycle, extra pension contributions, extra leave hours, or additional training costs.
  • Prospect of permanent employment: If we are mutually satisfied, you will receive a permanent contract after the first year.
  • Excellent pension scheme: With ABP (average salary system), where we cover about 70% of the premium. Care for a legendary future.
