  • Interest in experimentation, wargaming, and simulation in an R&D context;

  • Good basic knowledge of networks and protocols (TCP/UDP);

  • Experience with Linux, C#, and scripting to quickly set up or adapt experimentation environments;

  • Experience with virtualization and/or containerization;

  • You enjoy collaborating, dare to experiment, and can explain technical choices to non-technical colleagues;

  • Good communication skills in Dutch and English.

Nice to have

  • Experience with or interest in simulation and interoperability protocols (DIS/HLA/FOMs);

  • Affinity with battlelabs, LVC environments, or military simulation;

  • Experience in setting up temporary or experimental infrastructures;

  • Knowledge of network security or VPN solutions;

  • Experience with monitoring or observability tools;

  • Interest in new technologies such as autonomous systems, AI in simulation, or digital twins.

Pay & benefits

What you'll get

  • The opportunity to contribute to complex and socially relevant issues;

  • Sufficient holiday and ATV days (45 in total for full-time employment) for a good work-life balance;

  • An end-of-year bonus of 8%;

  • An allowance for your healthcare costs;

  • Extra paid parental leave;

  • The possibility to develop yourself with education and courses that match your ambitions.

The role

Are you curious about how military concepts, tactics, and technologies are tested before they enter practice? Do you want to work at the intersection of technology, experimentation, and operational concept development? Are you someone who can set up technical environments in which wargaming, (operational) simulation, and experiments come to life? Then we are looking for you!

What you'll do

In this role, you will work on designing, realizing, and adapting experimental simulation and wargaming environments within diverse research projects.

You translate research questions into a working technical setup in which simulators, models, software components, and sometimes live systems come together. This can range from a small-scale conceptual experiment to a large-scale distributed exercise involving multiple parties and countries.

Your duties include

  • Setting up and configuring temporary or project-based simulation environments;

  • Linking simulators and systems via interoperability standards (such as DIS/HLA);

  • Setting up secure and scalable network environments as part of experiments;

  • Supporting wargames and experiments during execution;

  • Further developing generic building blocks that are reusable in future projects.

Networks and systems are not an end in themselves in this position, but a means to enable realistic, reproducible, and flexible experimentation environments. You will work in multidisciplinary teams with researchers, software engineers, military domain experts, and external partners, both nationally and internationally.
