What you'll get

Working at NLR means working in a national and international high-tech environment. Collaboration and involvement are highly valued by us. By giving you freedom and personal responsibility, you are best able to achieve groundbreaking innovations. Do you want to develop yourself both professionally and personally? That is also possible at NLR as a learning organization, supplemented by a training budget, a mentor, internal coaches, and good contacts with vocational, applied sciences, and universities.

In addition to all this, we offer you:

  • The opportunity to contribute to complex and socially relevant issues;

  • 45 vacation days (based on full-time employment);

  • 8% holiday allowance and a fixed year-end bonus of 8%;

  • The costs for traveling by public transport are fully reimbursed. Do you travel with your own transport? Then you will receive a mileage allowance for commuting.

  • A healthcare allowance via our collective health insurance with OHRA as extra support for your healthcare costs;

  • Extra paid parental leave;

  • The possibility to develop yourself with education and courses that match your ambitions.

The role

Do you want to explore and improve the collaboration between intelligent systems and the user, and develop innovative applications based on that knowledge? Then we are looking for you!

As an R&D Engineer Human Machine Teaming (HMT), you are involved in the entire chain of research into how intelligent and autonomous systems can support humans in complex task environments.

What you'll do

As an experienced professional, we expect you to feel comfortable in various roles and to move effortlessly between project management, proposal management, and research. This means that you not only take the initiative for new projects but also elaborate on customer requirements and contribute substantively to projects in which you monitor progress and communicate proactively towards the client!

You design the interaction between the user and advanced systems, develop proof-of-concepts and demonstrators, and/or test what works and what does not in experiments within our simulation and XR environments.

What will you do?

As an R&D Engineer Human Machine Teaming at NLR, you explore innovative human-technology collaboration concepts for diverse projects. Sometimes these are internal knowledge development projects or European research calls; you also work for civil customers and defense.

In doing so, you work together with colleagues with diverse expertise, such as Human Factors specialists, UX designers, software developers, AI experts, and educational experts. Here, you make use of our AR/VR, spatial computing, and human-in-the-loop simulation environments.

A selection of your duties

  • You are familiar with the (im)possibilities of the latest AI technology, have acquired new knowledge about this, and devise how this can be deployed to support people in their daily work. From a technological perspective, you examine the interaction between humans and intelligent systems. How can you design an AI or automation so that it works well with the human operator?

  • You and your colleagues devise and design new collaboration concepts for different levels of autonomy and elaborate on these in a test environment. You guide the (co-)design process and software development and evaluate the final result in an operational environment or controlled experiment. Ultimately, you publish the results in a scientific journal whenever possible.

  • You devise and lead research projects commissioned by (external) stakeholders or for internal knowledge development projects.

What do you bring?

You are someone who thinks in opportunities and is curious to contribute to solutions. With your creative attitude, you quickly master new techniques and know how to translate them into concrete results!

Additionally:

  • Do you possess a demonstrable university-level (WO) working and thinking level? For example, you have a completed degree or PhD in Human-Computer Interaction, Design for Interaction, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, or a similar field in which AI and/or Human-Machine Interaction plays an important role;

  • Do you have at least 8 years of relevant work experience, of which at least 3 years consist of knowledge and experience in the field of AI or HIS and/or in relevant research projects;

  • Do you have experience leading design or research projects focused on advanced, autonomous, and/or intelligent systems in complex task environments;

  • Do you have knowledge of and experience with applying AI techniques and software development, such as practical experience with Python, NLP / LLM, and ML frameworks? Or do you have experience with the development and implementation of UI/UX design for information-intensive systems and/or complex work environments;

  • Are you willing to delve into (military) aviation operations;

  • Can you express yourself excellently in both the Dutch and English languages, both orally and in writing?
