The role

  • Because you are part of a major program, ERTMS, in which the international standard for train protection is being realized, meaning you play an important role in achieving the mission of NS: "Together we make the Netherlands sustainably accessible. For everyone."
  • Because you have an eye for (planning) risks and like to make others alert to them
  • Because you derive pleasure from contact with diverse stakeholders and from maintaining oversight of complex processes, both within NS and in the national ERTMS program.

What you'll do

ERTMS stands for European Rail Traffic Management System, the international standard for train protection, also outside Europe. ERTMS is being built into trains and the railway infrastructure. With this, we are moving from an analog to a digital track. ERTMS ensures a safer track and also offers potential benefits in terms of reliability, speed, increasing capacity, and easier cross-border train traffic.
The ERTMS program of NS (ERTMS@NS) is a large program spanning several years with the aim of introducing the train protection system at NS.

Within the ERTMS@NS program, multiple projects are being worked on simultaneously, which together determine the final outcome of the program: a transport system under the renewed safety system ERTMS, without its implementation leading to a decline in NS service to the passenger.
Special attention must therefore be paid to the mutual dependencies between the projects.

Your tasks are

  • Advice:
On the basis of professional planning analyses, providing requested and unrequested advice to program management, directors, and steering groups regarding:
    • the status and feasibility of the NS (Level 2) planning. Acting as an independent thinker and being able to consider matters from a holistic approach. Additionally, being able to translate long-term goals into short-term actions.
    • the planning process within ERTMS@NS and the national program with the aim of continuously improving this process.
  • Analysis:
Proactively performing various analyses on the (Level 2) planning in order to have a current view of the feasibility, critical paths, bandwidths, and "weak spots" of the planning.
  • Drafting and managing Level 2 planning:
Providing an up-to-date Level 2 control planning and ensuring alignment with the underlying Level 3 and 4 plans,
  • Alignment of environments:
Keeping the two planning "worlds" of NS (level 2) and the national program (level 1) together and ensuring the correct balance in the connection between them. Additionally, fulfilling the role of linking-pin between the NS program and the national program regarding the management aspect of planning.
  • Point of contact:
The central point of contact within the NS program for everything related to planning at Level 2.
  • Coaching:
Coaching planner(s) within the program and monitoring the agreed process arrangements and way of working.
