The role

Are you a specialist in the field of computer networks and protocols and do you have an affinity for applying simulation and training systems in an R&D context? Do you want to work in an innovative research environment where advanced simulators and interoperability are central? Then we are looking for you!

What you'll do

As a network expert within our department, you are responsible for research and development focused on networks and systems that securely and efficiently connect various simulators and operational systems. You will work on issues regarding network architectures, (simulation) protocols such as DIS and HLA, network security, and the scalability of complex simulation environments. You will make a significant contribution to enabling interoperability between simulators, operational systems, and autonomous platforms, and you will be involved in the (further) development of both existing and new simulation networks. In multidisciplinary teams, you will work together with, among others, software developers, domain experts, and future end users on innovative solutions for national and international stakeholders. For this, you are prepared to travel to various locations, primarily within the Netherlands.

What do you bring?

You are someone who thinks in opportunities and is curious to contribute to solutions that work in practice. You find it very easy to connect with end users and can quickly translate their wishes and ideas into creative implementations. With your creative attitude, you quickly master new technologies and know how to translate them into concrete results!

Additionally:

  • Do you have a completed bachelor's or master's degree in ICT, Computer Science, Informatics, Information Science, or similar;

  • Do you have at least 8 years of relevant work experience, of which at least 5 years of experience in the field of network technology, TCP/UDP, network protocols, routing, switching, and network security;

  • Do you master multiple programming languages such as C, C++, C#, Java and have experience in scripting to quickly set up or adapt experimentation environments;

  • Do you have an interest in experimentation, wargaming, and simulation in an R&D context;

  • Do you have experience in designing and managing robust, scalable network environments;

  • Are you willing to delve into (military) aviation operations;

  • Do you enjoy collaborating, dare to experiment, and can you explain technical choices to non-technical colleagues;

  • Can you express yourself excellently in both the Dutch and English languages, both orally and in writing.

Nice to have

  • Experience with or interest in simulation and interoperability protocols (DIS/HLA/FOMs);

  • Experience in setting up temporary or experimental infrastructures;

  • Knowledge of network security or VPN solutions;

  • Experience with monitoring or observability tools;

  • Interest in new technologies such as autonomous systems, AI in simulation, or digital twins.

What do we offer you?

Working at NLR means working in a national and international high-tech environment. Collaboration and commitment are highly valued by us. By giving you freedom and personal responsibility, you are best able to achieve groundbreaking innovations. Do you want to develop yourself professionally and personally? That is also possible at NLR as a learning organization, alongside a training budget, a mentor, internal coaches, and good contacts with vocational, applied sciences, and universities.

In addition to all this, we offer you:

  • The opportunity to contribute to complex and socially relevant issues;

  • A gross monthly salary between € 4330,- and € 7000,- (based on full-time employment), depending on your knowledge and experience;

  • 45 vacation days (based on full-time employment);

  • 8% holiday allowance and a fixed year-end bonus of 8%;

  • The costs for traveling by public transport are fully reimbursed. Do you travel by your own transport? Then you will receive a mileage allowance for commuting;

  • A healthcare allowance via our collective health insurance with OHRA as extra support for your healthcare costs;

  • Extra paid parental leave;

  • A good pension scheme
