The role

That is why you want to work as a Train Technician at NS

  • Through technical inspections, you ensure that our trains remain in top condition.
  • You work on various repairs, which means no two days are the same.
  • You work with new trains and therefore also with the latest technology.

Fatih: "The moment I start my work, for example during a daily inspection or while resolving a malfunction, I keep the passengers on the train in mind. They must be transported safely."

Additional information

NS performs the maintenance and service for almost all trains in the Netherlands itself. You play an important role in this. Together with your colleagues, you ensure that our trains are in top condition, so they can run safely, comfortably, and on time.

In this position, you are responsible for inspecting, maintaining, and repairing various types of trains. Thanks to your interest in technology and your sharp eye during malfunctions, you are of great value in:

  • Reading work orders and performing technical inspections on trains.
  • Solving simple malfunctions and replacing or repairing broken parts.
  • Detecting malfunctions and clearly recording what you have found in the systems.
  • Consulting with your supervisor about which investigations and repairs are necessary.
  • Thinking along about how work, technology, and safety can be even better.

As a technician at NS, you often work independently on a train. You receive clear assignments and have a lot of personal responsibility. At the same time, you work in a team: you coordinate with colleagues, ask for help with difficult malfunctions, and work together to ensure safe and reliable trains.

We are looking for 3 train technology technicians for the Service Department in Alkmaar.

Where you will work

The Randstad Noord Service Department has 2 locations: Watergraafsmeer and Alkmaar. The base for this position is Alkmaar. You will also regularly work at 1 of the 5 external locations: Den Helder, Enkhuizen, Haarlem, Hoorn, or Hoofddorp.

You will work in an irregular schedule with early, late, night, and weekend shifts. In addition to the fixed schedule, the Service Department also works with a reserve team. It may therefore be that you do not always work in a fixed schedule, but are sometimes scheduled as a reserve. In consultation, it may occur that you deviate from your schedule once in a while so that you can take on other tasks. The working hours are:

  • Early: 06:45 to 15:15
  • Late: 14:45 to 23:15
  • Night: 22:45 to 07:15

In Alkmaar, you will work together with approximately 40 colleagues. The team of team leaders consists of 8 colleagues. Because it is a relatively small location, the atmosphere is open and people approach each other easily.

At NS, you will get the space to keep your knowledge up to date and expand it. You can follow training and courses to increase your professional knowledge and to develop yourself personally. At the Alkmaar Service Department, there are various growth opportunities. Over time, you can further specialize as a technical specialist, become a practical instructor and train new technicians, or grow into a leadership role as a team leader.

These are the job requirements

.You possess an MBO-3 SOT (Service and Maintenance Technician) or you possess at least another MBO-3 diploma in technology. If you do not yet possess a completed MBO-3 SOT (Service and Maintenance Technician) education, NS offers a training program in which you will obtain your MBO-3 SOT.

  • You have technical work experience or a strong interest in technology.
  • You want to combine working and learning to quickly master train technology.
  • You enjoy performing inspections and solving malfunctions.
  • You want to further develop in train technology and get excited by technical puzzles.
  • You enjoy working with your hands and feel responsible for the quality of your work.

The training program
If you do not yet possess a completed Mbo 3 SOT education, NS offers a training program in which you will be fully trained as a train technology technician.

Your professional and personal development will be central to the training program. But what the training program will look like specifically depends on your current experience and highest completed education. That is why a personal training plan is drawn up together with your manager and instructor, determining whether you will follow a full MBO-3 SOT program (part-time) or specific parts of it. In addition to the training, you will also be deployed right away as a rail track technician and learn all the tricks of the trade. How cool is that?!

In concrete terms:

  • The training is a BBL track where working and learning are combined. That means you receive a salary from day one.
  • Once you have successfully completed the training program, you will start working independently within NS as a qualified train technology technician.

At NS, we find diversity and inclusion important; it makes working together more enjoyable and often improves the result. What your background or religious belief is does not matter: we are primarily curious about your vision for the position of Train Technology Technician.

  • A maximum salary of max. € 3,948.12 (scale 56) per month (based on a 36-hour work week). Scaling (scale 55 or 56) is dependent on education, knowledge, and experience.

  • 144 hours of statutory leave (based on a 36-hour work week) supplemented with extra leave depending on age (minimum one week).
