The role

That is why you want to work as a Frontend developer at NS

That is why you want to work as a Senior frontend developer at NS

  • Your work has impact! As a developer of personnel adjustment, you contribute directly to keeping the trains running in the Netherlands.

  • You are involved from start to finish in the Development and DevOps challenges. From design to development and management.

  • Through the products we develop, you contribute to a mobile, accessible, and sustainable society. With a good chance of finding a seat, trains running on time, and the rapid resolution of any disruptions on the tracks.

This is what you will do as a frontend developer

IT plays a major role in our organization and therefore good developers are indispensable. Thanks to their commitment, trains run on time, the chance of a seat is optimal, and you as a traveler have up-to-date travel information 24 hours a day. That is the power of our IT.

The Agile Release Train where your new workplace awaits works on the IT of Adjustment. With this, the people of Operations Control manage the NS train service daily. 7,000 train journeys, around the clock. We ensure, for example, that our trains are long enough to offer all our passengers a seat and that there is a driver and conductor on board. Not only when the trains run according to plan, but precisely also when everything runs differently than expected due to a defective train or a collision.

IT developments move fast, so you actively think along about possibilities for the future. The DevOps team, including Product Owner and Scrum Master, works on the foundation and subsequent expansion of the Personnel Adjustment Application. As a senior frontend developer, you interact daily with your team colleagues, other teams, and for example, also the software architects. You monitor the architectural frameworks and contribute to the architecture roadmap.

Where you will work

The adjustment cluster is part of the Train Service Result Area. We provide the IT systems that support the processes of planning, controlling, and adjusting rolling stock and the timetable. Our team's work location is hybrid, with days in the office in Utrecht and days from home.

Our team follows the Agile way of thinking and working. Thus, we are fully committed to Continuous Delivery, Continuous Integration, and DevOps. And that within a Release Train with eight Agile teams with a multidisciplinary composition. You will get space and time to brainstorm, share knowledge, and learn.

The current system for our personnel adjustment is still a monolithic application and must be modernized into microservices. In order to further shape the digitalization of the train service. We will start this in the short term. Based on your experience with modernizing monolithic 24/7 rail applications, you are the engine that helps us succeed in this assignment.

These are the job requirements

  • HBO/university level of work and thinking; excellent command of the Dutch language.

  • At least 5 years of experience as a developer in a complex IT landscape.

  • Experience with multi-user systems with high requirements for availability and security.

  • Developing a ReactJS frontend on a Java backend.

  • Processing live server mutations (WebSocket/SSE) and merging them with concept changes, without the user losing work.

  • Monitoring performance with thousands of journey segments and employees in view.

  • Designing the API contract together with backend developers (mutation events, versions, idempotent commits).

  • Writing component and end-to-end tests.

  • Being able to maintain CI/CD pipelines.

  • Agile/DevOps mindset; team player who stands for Ownership, Commitment, Courage, Focus, Openness, and Respect.

  • Participating in the on-call service in the long term: being reachable by phone 24/7 for one week to analyze and resolve incidents, approximately 1x every 6 weeks.

You recognize yourself in the following:

  • You bring a lot of experience, and you master your subject matter quickly. You have collaborated extensively with solution architects, product owners, and end users.

  • You learn quickly and enjoy it, you see where opportunities for improvement lie, and you bring others along with you. You are a strong advocate for AI-driven development and are able to move with that unpredictable movement toward the software development of the future.
