The role

You will follow the training to become a medical microbiologist. You are the connecting link between the clinician, the laboratory, and the patient. Your activities vary from laboratory diagnostics and advising on the treatment and prevention of infectious diseases to actively participating in multidisciplinary consultations.

You are involved in implementing new diagnostic techniques, developing policy, and in laboratory management. You will be involved in innovation, digitalization, and the modernization of the MMI department. Furthermore, you will work together with the GGD (Public Health Service), nursing homes, general practitioners, and infection prevention experts. During your training, you will also be involved in the department's scientific research. You will follow your training at the MUMC+ and Zuyderland Medical Center, where you will spend a maximum of one year of your training. This allows you to gain experience in both an academic and a large general hospital, with different patient populations and issues.

At the start of the training, an individual training plan is drawn up with the aim of acquiring competencies in all subfields belonging to the integrated task set of the medical microbiologist, namely:

What you'll do

  • Laboratory diagnostics (incl. ISO quality assurance),

  • Intercollegiate consultation,

  • Laboratory management,

  • Policy making and development of protocols and guidelines,

  • Infection prevention and epidemiology of infectious diseases,

    • Antibiotic stewardship

  • Public healthcare,

    • Information, education, and research

  • Scientific research.

What will you do?

The written professional profile can be found at www.nvmm.nl. More information about the training can also be found at www.nvamm.nl.
During the training, in consultation with the trainers, you will further shape your individual training plan, tailored to your interests and learning goals. There is plenty of room for personal choices, including shadowing internships at other institutions.

What does your work environment look like?

The MMI department provides microbiological diagnostics and intercollegiate consultation in all subfields of the profession, both for the hospital and for the GGD, general practitioners, and nursing homes in the region.

Scientific research focuses on 3 research lines: microbiome, transmission of pathogens/resistance genes, and public healthcare (particularly STIs).

In addition to the training for medical microbiologist, the training for medical molecular microbiologist, internist-infectiologist, and infection prevention expert are provided by the department. Furthermore, employees of the department provide education to students of the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences, as well as other faculties of Maastricht University (UM), and there is intensive cooperation with the Infectious Disease Control department of the GGD Zuid-Limburg and various institutes in the Meuse-Rhine Euroregion.

The staff includes 8 medical microbiologists, 3 medical molecular microbiologists, 3 senior researchers, 2 data scientists, and 6 internist-infectiologists. You will join a close-knit group of ten AIOS (residents), with attention to each other's development and training wishes. Among other things, you will exchange experiences and think together during intervision. More than 100 employees currently work at the entire MMI department.

MUMC+ offers an inspiring academic working environment, in which colleagues know each other, lines of communication are short, and the different sections collaborate in an accessible manner. This goes hand in hand with a touch of Burgundian conviviality, which can, of course, also be enjoyed outside of working hours in the beautiful surroundings.
