The company is a Dutch data platform that makes geo-data available to anyone who wishes to use it. The geo-data is current and reliable and comes from various government parties. The company makes this geo-data available through various APIs (including WFS, WMS, WMTS, RESTful), downloads, and applications. An example of calling the company's APIs/web services is NL Maps. Here you can see how easily you can generate a map image of the Netherlands at different zoom levels by calling the APIs.
The services are based on open data and are therefore freely available to everyone. Data can include topographical data, aerial photographs, buildings, roads, static data, and many more types of data. Users of the company's data and services include, for example, analysts conducting research, but in many cases also Software Engineers who, for example, create applications for mobile phones, websites, or viewers based on APIs. A key task for the company is ensuring that data can be made available quickly via APIs, has good performance, and high availability. Examples of applications used by external users include VanAnaarBeter, the Geozet Viewer, or the Kadaster website (commissioned by the Ministry), where one can see where drone flights are permitted.
For 2021 and beyond, we are focusing on three key areas:
The company has impact! In recent years, the company has grown from 580 million requests in 2013 to more than 20 billion requests today. It is expected that annual usage will double in the coming years. To handle this growth, we are continuously optimizing the infrastructure. The most important step we are going to take is the step towards the Cloud. This is necessary on the one hand to ensure our service delivery, and on the other hand, a very beautiful challenge to reshape our platform and our standards. Additionally, you can think of setting up new components or optimizing existing components, setting up monitoring, etc.
2. Automation and standardization regarding data processing and APIs
To optimize the setup of data and APIs, much attention will be paid in the coming period to further automating and standardizing processes. This should make the ingestion of new data within the infrastructure even simpler, faster, and of higher quality.
3. Standardizing services and provisions in accordance with INSPIRE implementation regulations
In nationaalgeoregister.nl, the Netherlands has created an INSPIRE node, allowing everyone to automatically retrieve metadata, which includes links to the data services of INSPIRE datasets. Datasets and services falling under one of the 34 INSPIRE themes must be findable, consultable, and downloadable. They must also connect across borders. This process started in 2010 and runs through 2021.
