The role

At CowManager, we process large amounts of data from our IoT sensors every day. That data helps dairy farmers worldwide to make better decisions regarding the health, fertility, and well-being of their cows.

Behind this lies an Azure and Databricks platform that must be secure, reliable, and scalable. We are looking for a DevOps Engineer to further develop this platform and take the infrastructure within our data engineering team to a higher level.

What you'll do

Our Data Engineers process data and make it available for our products and colleagues. You will provide the technical foundation upon which they can build. You automate where possible, identify risks in a timely manner, and also collaborate with DevOps Engineers from other teams.

Other responsibilities include:

  • Developing our Azure and Databricks infrastructure using Terraform and/or Bicep

  • Setting up and improving CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions

  • Working on network security, roles and permissions, and disaster recovery

  • Creating reusable templates and frameworks that allow other teams to work independently

  • Collaborating on a self-service environment for BI and analytics

  • Actively driving the efficient use of the platform by other teams

Where is the technical challenge?

A data platform is already in place, but there are still plenty of steps to be taken. Think of the migration to Databricks Managed Catalogs, defining groups and permissions in Terraform, and further configuring and testing disaster recovery.

Additionally, we are working on an environment in which teams can query data and create dashboards themselves, including with Databricks Genie. The challenge is to properly manage the associated dashboards and pipelines, set up access securely, and allocate costs to projects and teams. You will also contribute ideas regarding data governance and the storage of older time-series data.

This is a new role within the data engineering team. Furthermore, we are also in the process of establishing a (data) platform team. You will be given the space to identify improvements yourself and help determine how we can further professionalize the platform and this team.

What do you bring?

Experience with Databricks or a similar data/cloud platform. You do not need to be a Data Engineer, but we are looking for someone who can quickly master Databricks. You have a strong DevOps or infrastructure background and enjoy applying that knowledge within a data environment.
