• You are analytically strong and can convey complex subject matter clearly and pragmatically, both in writing and orally.

• You are independent, structured, and proactive, and take the initiative to improve processes and working methods and to manage various interests effectively.
• You have knowledge of or affinity with professional regulations from the NOvA, KNB, and NOB, privacy legislation (GDPR), and the Wwft;
• You can express yourself well orally and in writing in Dutch and English.
For our Legal, Risk & Compliance team, we are looking for an experienced and independent Client Engagement Counsel.
At Stibbe, you work alongside professionals at an international law firm. From our head office in Amsterdam, we handle highly complex legal matters, both internationally and nationally.
You take the lead in the legal and compliance aspects surrounding client acceptance and the engagement of assignments. You operate at the intersection of contract law, compliance, and stakeholder management, acting both as the strategic thinker who further develops Stibbe's client engagement framework, and as the hands-on counsel who personally conducts and advises on complex negotiations. You do not simply solve common questions repeatedly, but translate them into policies, standards, and working methods that advance the entire organization.
Concretely, this means you:
• Takes ownership of the complete client engagement framework—including engagement letters, general terms and conditions, and framework agreements—and determines the direction for its further development.
• Takes the lead personally in complex and commercially important negotiations—from terms of engagement and framework agreements to Outside Counsel Guidelines, Billing Guidelines, and Supplier Codes of Conduct. You draft, review, advise, negotiate, and conclude—and you know when to push forward and when to allow room.
• Advises lawyers and civil-law notaries on individual client contracts and contractual risks, providing practical solutions that bring together legal diligence and commercial reality.
• Identifies and structurally resolves patterns: you translate recurring questions, discussion points, and bottlenecks from daily practice into standard clauses, practical solutions, training, and guidelines—so that the organization can act faster, more consistently, and more independently.
• Initiates process improvements in the client acceptance process, with an eye for both client-friendliness and internal alignment.
• Acts as a sparring partner for the Board, partners, and directors regarding guiding choices around client acceptance, risk, and commercial terms.
• Further develops the internal Code of Conduct and other policy rules and brings them to attention through training and awareness sessions.
• Proactively follows relevant new and amended regulations from, among others, the NOvA, KNB, and NOB, analyzes the impact, and translates them into policies, procedures, and practical guidelines.
• Provides direction to innovation and technology within the field: you drive the further development of our tooling and systems for client acceptance and contract management, and look at where data and technology can make our processes smarter.
• Collaborates with colleagues at the Stibbe offices in Brussels, London, and Luxembourg, communicating professionally in both Dutch and English.
• Handles broader compliance and privacy issues within the Legal, Risk & Compliance department, advising on Wwft client investigations (2nd line), GDPR topics, and the establishment of compliance frameworks within the organization.
You have a completed university degree (WO) in Law and at least 5 years of relevant work experience, preferably as a lawyer or legal counsel within professional services or a partner organization.
A versatile position, with the opportunity to develop yourself. A good atmosphere and a pleasant working environment in a building focused on transparency and collaboration. And of course, a good salary and attractive employment conditions that we would love to tell you more about.

You are part of the Legal, Risk & Compliance team and report to the Director Legal, Risk & Compliance. You work closely with the Risk & Compliance Officer and, in your role, have intensive contact with the Board, partners, directors, lawyers, civil-law notaries, and clients—throughout the entire organization.
