The role
That is why you want to work as a Fullstack Developer within the IT Operations Service Cluster
Julian - Fullstack Developer
"When you see a conductor looking at his smartwatch on the train, you know that our software is helping him perform his shift well at that moment. That makes the impact of your work very concrete."
This is what you will do as a Fullstack Developer within the IT Operations Service
As a fullstack developer, you will work in a DevOps team and be involved from the initial idea through to realization and further development. You don't just build features, but also think along about solutions that truly make a difference in practice for colleagues and travelers.
What you'll do
- You will work on existing, mission-critical applications such as Wissel and MijnVertrektijd, which are used intensively on a daily basis;
- You will contribute to the crown jewels of NS, where continuity, availability, and reliability are paramount;
- You will work on software with visible impact, close to the people who rely on it every day.
You will work on both web and mobile solutions:
- Backend: .NET (C#) in Azure Cloud, Containerized, database, cache, service bus, oauth;
- Mobile and smartwatch Frontend: native Android apps with modern technology such as Kotlin and Jetpack Compose.
In addition, you will ensure robust integrations by designing, building, and exposing APIs. Within PFS, we work with cluster-wide standards and solutions such as Atlas and ROBE for backend and frontend. This makes our solutions more maintainable, reusable, and consistent. You will not only apply these standards but also actively contribute to their further development and improvement. This makes this role extra interesting if, for example, you enjoy contributing to open-source projects in your free time.
You will work in an Azure cloud environment following principles such as infrastructure as code. We release on demand, often multiple times a day, and bring an idea into production within a few hours or days. Because our applications meet the highest service level agreements within NS, we do this with a high degree of stability and reliability. This way of working ensures strong performance on DORA metrics and offers you an inspiring environment where speed, quality, and continuous improvement come together. You will not only develop software but also contribute to systems that are reliable, scalable, secure, and future-proof.
Security plays an important role in this. We anticipate legislation and regulations such as NIS2 ourselves and assess together with the business what impact this has, so that we arrive at solutions that are fit for purpose. In doing so, we work closely with stakeholders such as the architect, security officer, cloud experts, and the platform teams of Atlas and ROBE. Security-by-design and privacy-by-design form the starting point here:
- You will take authentication, authorization, and data security into account during design and implementation;
- You will safeguard quality and security with, among other things, automated tests, code quality checks, and security scans within CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps.
Collaboration is crucial. You will work intensively with your PO, Service Experts, UX, and Business stakeholders from operations. Together, you will translate service issues into concrete, working solutions. You look beyond the technology: you feel responsible for the whole, check if solutions truly work in practice, and actively drive impact.
These are the job requirements
You have a solid foundation as a developer and move effortlessly between backend and frontend. You are used to working in a modern development environment and understand how to contribute to business value through technology. You look beyond just the code:
- You think from the perspective of the user and the practice in operations;
- You test and validate your solutions against actual usage;
- Collaboration comes naturally to you. You actively seek connection with cluster colleagues and stakeholders and feel co-responsible for the result;
- You take ownership, are curious, and are continuously looking for how things can be improved. In doing so, you enjoy working in a data-driven manner or want to develop yourself further in this;
Preferably with

In their own words
About the company & team
You will come to work at IT Operations, where we support the daily operations of NS with digital solutions that have a direct impact on colleagues on the train, on shore, and on our travelers. The Service Cluster focuses specifically on supporting Service & Operations (S&O), our largest business stakeholder. S&O is responsible for execution on the train and at the station, thereby forming the core of the service provided to travelers.
Within the PFS Cluster, we work for various target groups in operations, from driver to conductor, but also team managers and indirectly the traveler who benefits from better service and information.
For these target groups, we develop solutions that ensure:
- Colleagues can work more efficiently and receive better support;
- Every contact moment with the traveler adds value;
- Colleagues can help travelers in a customized way in practice;
- Work in operations is focused on what delivers the most value at that moment.
We organize ourselves around five value streams: Service, Checking & Enforcement, Service, Qualified & Competent and Enablers. We have just started this domain-oriented way of working, which aligns even better with our business. For you, this means plenty of room to contribute to innovation, improvement, and the further shaping of mutual collaboration.
Within the PFS Cluster, service, collaboration, and sustainability are highly valued. You can see these values reflected in both our way of working and in the solutions we build. In addition to work, we find connection important. That is why we regularly organize cluster and domain activities, so there is also room for fun, meeting people, and strengthening mutual relationships.
Service Domain
You will come to work within the Service domain, where you will work on solutions that optimally support employees on the train to properly prepare and execute their shift with the right information at the right time using the right means.
In the Service domain, the focus lies on:
- Insight into services;
- Communication about changes to services;
- Executing the departure process;
- Information about trains and rolling stock;
- Information about routes and times;
- Collaborating and sharing information with colleagues.
At the heart of our operations, you will build mission-critical solutions that support colleagues on the train in the execution of their shift.
