"You are not only working on modern front-end technology here, but especially on solutions that make a visible difference for travelers every day. The short lines of communication with the users give you direct insight into the impact of what you build."
- Sem Geuze Front-end developer, team User Interface

What you'll do

Ensuring that the people of the Rail Operational Control Center (OCCR) have access to an application with an easy-to-use interface. An application with which they can quickly communicate timetable changes via various channels to everyone traveling by train at that moment. That is what you will do as a DevOps front-end developer at the Travel Information Service Organization of NS in Utrecht. Through our applications, changes—such as a train arriving at a different platform or experiencing a delay—can be communicated to travelers. This happens, for example, via the displays on the platform, but also via the NS app or 9292.

Together with your colleagues from the User Interface team, you will work in two-week sprints on changes and innovations in the graphical user interfaces. In doing so, you will receive a lot of freedom to come up with new proposals and to work in your own way. We are part of a large chain, but we can coordinate, develop, and release incredibly fast. With this, we truly make a difference for the users of the application and thus for train travelers in the Netherlands. An extra highlight is that a visit to the OCCR takes place every four weeks, where you can see how your applications are being used and where you can gather direct feedback from your users. That is when you truly get a good picture of what you are all doing it for. Thanks to your experience as a front-end developer and your drive to improve, you will be of invaluable importance for:

  • The development, management, renewal, and innovation of important travel information applications.

  • The dailies, refinements, and reviews for every sprint.

  • Arriving at solutions for a user interface that is as user-friendly and intuitive as possible, which is part of a complex IT domain.

  • Promoting best practices within the team, towards the cluster, the engineering community, and architecture.

  • Advising stakeholders, such as product owners, IT leads, architects, and other engineers, on solutions to choose or already chosen solutions.

  • Monitoring the quality of deliveries and acting proactively in continuous improvement within the team and towards the cluster.

About the company & team

You will work in team User Interface, one of the nine DevOps teams within the Travel Information Service Organization department. In the team, you will work together with a product owner, UX designers, three fellow front-end developers, and a scrum master. UX designers create the designs in Figma. Together, we ensure a pleasant and safe working environment in which everyone is allowed and encouraged to give their opinion. And we are all open to each other's feedback, suggestions, and ideas. Every Tuesday and Thursday, we work together in the office. Catching up over coffee is then certainly as important as the work itself. We certainly find it fun to do nice things together occasionally, such as an evening at the jeu-de-boules bar in Utrecht or playing a board game together.
