The role

Do you prefer to rely on measurement data rather than assumptions? As a Field Laboratory Technician Geotechnical Soil Investigation, you investigate whether soil structures and waterbeds meet the specified quality requirements. Your measurements and analyses form an important basis for safe dike reinforcement, infrastructure, and construction projects.

You work at diverse project locations throughout the Netherlands, from dike reinforcements and road construction projects to large-scale construction and infrastructure works. Many projects run for several weeks or months, meaning you are often working at the same location for an extended period. You start directly at the project location from your mobile field laboratory. From this workplace, you perform specialist geotechnical quality controls on, among other things, embankments, foundation layers, dikes, and waterbeds. You take samples, classify soil types, perform compaction tests, and carry out in-situ measurements to determine the physical and mechanical properties of the soil.

Based on your research results, you assess whether a structure meets the geotechnical principles, quality standards, and execution specifications. For example, after the installation of a sand or clay layer, you check whether the required degree of compaction has been achieved. When it appears that the specified requirements are not met, contractors can take targeted corrective measures based on your findings.

What you'll do

  • Performing geotechnical soil investigation and field tests;

  • Taking, describing, and assessing soil samples;

  • Performing compaction, density, and nuclear density measurements;

  • Discussing research results with contractors, supervisors, and clients;

  • Recording and reporting measurement data, drilling descriptions, and research results.

Internal training program

In the initial period, you will work together with experienced colleagues and become acquainted with various research methods, measuring equipment, and safety procedures. You will learn how to perform sampling, classify soil types, conduct compaction tests, and register research data.

As you gain more experience, you will carry out soil investigations independently and expand your knowledge with specialist techniques such as cone penetration tests, mechanical drilling, and nuclear density measurements. In this way, you will develop step by step into a versatile geotechnical specialist with an important role within complex civil engineering projects.

What you have to offer

  • You have an MBO working and thinking level;

  • You have an interest in geotechnics, soil investigation, or laboratory technology;

  • You enjoy working outdoors and feel at home in a practical, physical working environment;

  • You communicate clearly and are self-assured. Based on your measurements and analyses, you dare to give an objective and substantiated judgment;

  • You do not find it a problem to be away from home for several days at a time for projects;

  • You have command of the Dutch language;

  • You possess a VCA certificate or are willing to obtain one;

  • You have a driving license B (driving license C is a plus).
