Senior Backend Engineer

We expect:

• At least 6 years of experience with backend development

• Excellent knowledge of PHP

• Experience with MySQL/MariaDB and caching with Redis

• Understanding of distributed systems and messaging (such as RabbitMQ)

• Familiarity with Docker, Kubernetes, GitLab CI/CD, and observability tooling

• Experience with GraphQL is a plus

• Communicating clearly about architectural choices and trade-offs

• Comfortable in guiding others via reviews or pair programming

• A pragmatic view on legacy code and technical debt

At Gomibo, we build almost all backend systems ourselves - from payments and logistics to order processing and content management. Our backend teams design and maintain the core of our platform: systems that are reliable, scalable, and easy to maintain. As a Senior Backend Engineer, you will take the lead in complex projects, contribute to important architectural choices, and help your team build stable solutions that make a real impact.

You build backend services that are robust and maintainable, guide technical choices, and take responsibility for complex systems and projects.

Examples of what you will do:

• Taking the lead in backend projects and working together with colleagues on projects: from design to go-live

• Building new services or improving existing systems in PHP

• Refactoring legacy code for scalability and simplicity

• Reviewing merge requests and collaborating to build complex features

• Debugging intricate bugs, such as race conditions in Redis

• Collaborating with other teams on shared models and interfaces

• Thinking along about the technical roadmap and the team's priorities

• Coaching colleagues, providing technical guidance, and helping with practical tips or technical background

*You are able to work at the office in Groningen during your entire onboarding period. After that, we have a remote working policy of a maximum of 2 days per week. More days are possible in consultation.
