Requirements
What we're looking for
We are explicitly looking for a senior, hands-on engineer. Someone who knows VMware through and through, but also understands what is happening under and around the virtualization layer.
We would love to meet you if you:
- have at least 8 years of relevant hands-on experience as a VMware, Virtualization, Infrastructure, or Private Cloud Engineer;
- have in-depth practical experience with VMware vSphere and vCenter, preferably vSphere 8 or newer;
- have experience with VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), or are demonstrably ready to take that step from a strong VMware background;
- understand how compute, storage, networking, and hardware come together within a private cloud platform;
- have sufficient networking knowledge to think along about connectivity, switching, routing, and network dependencies;
- have experience with automation, configuration management, and/or Infrastructure as Code;
- are used to working in environments where availability, security, and operational stability are important;
- want to take ownership of the full lifecycle: plan, build, run, and improve;
- have excellent command of the Dutch language, both spoken and written.
Nice to have
- have knowledge of on-premises Kubernetes platforms; experience with Rancher is a plus;
Experience with public cloud, such as Microsoft Azure, is a nice-to-have, but not a requirement. The technical core of this role lies with VMware and private cloud.
The role
Build a private cloud that literally must not go down
Building a new private cloud environment from scratch does not happen often. Building a platform on which mission-critical applications will run happens even less often. For one of our customers, we are building a completely new private cloud environment. Not an existing environment where you only perform management, but a greenfield platform in which you have influence on technical choices, architecture, and the way the platform will be run from the very beginning.
The foundation will be VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF). Together with the team, you will build a reliable, secure, and as automated as possible private cloud platform. In doing so, you will work across the full stack: from compute, storage, and networking to virtualization, automation, monitoring, and lifecycle management.
After the build, you do not hand the platform over to an operations team: you remain responsible for what you have set up. This is how we work at Schuberg Philis: plan, build, and run.
What you'll do
You enter the process early, meaning there is still much to be determined and built. Therefore, we are not looking for someone who can only manage an existing VMware environment, but an experienced engineer who knows how to design, build, and run a robust platform.
You bring experience from previous environments and use it to make technical choices together with the team. In doing so, you will work on, among other things:
- designing, building, and running a new VMware Cloud Foundation environment;
- setting up and further developing the virtualization, compute, storage, and network foundations;
- building a standardized and as automated as possible private cloud platform;
- integrating and supporting an on-premises Kubernetes platform based on Rancher within the new private cloud environment;
- lifecycle management, monitoring, security, availability, and capacity management;
- automating repetitive work and further developing Infrastructure as Code;
- integrations between VMware, networking, storage, and the underlying hardware;
- troubleshooting across different layers of the infrastructure;
- continuously improving the platform once it is running in production.
In doing so, you look beyond just VMware. If a problem lies outside the hypervisor layer, your responsibility does not stop there. You want to understand how the entire platform works and, together with your colleagues, take ownership of the solution.
Your technology landscape
We do not expect you to already know every product or every technology in detail. More importantly, from your VMware expertise, you can oversee the entire platform, understand connections between different infrastructure layers, and quickly master new technologies.
About Schuberg Philis
In their own words
About the company & team
VMware Cloud Foundation forms the heart of the new platform.
You will work with technologies and concepts surrounding VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), VMware vSphere, vCenter, NSX, Kubernetes, Rancher, compute, storage, networking, automation, Infrastructure as Code, monitoring, security, and lifecycle management.
You will become part of a larger Customer Team of approximately 15 to 20 engineers. Within this team, a smaller group of approximately four to five engineers works specifically on the private cloud platform. Various expertises come together here, including VMware, networking, and cloud and container technology.
At Schuberg Philis, we do not work according to a model in which an architect conceives something, a project team builds it, and operations subsequently takes it over. As an engineer, you are at the table when technical choices are made. You help build the solution and remain responsible for it when it is live.
That means a lot of freedom, but also a lot of responsibility. You get the chance to build a new VMware Cloud Foundation platform from the ground up, instead of only maintaining an existing VMware environment.
You can directly use your experience from previous enterprise VMware environments for design choices and technical standards. At the same time, you will get space to further develop towards modern private cloud, automation, and platform engineering.
You work in an environment where engineers make technical decisions themselves and where reliability, security, and quality are not separate responsibilities, but part of the daily engineering work.
Everyone we work with and consider working with has a right to equal treatment. The hiring and appraisal process at Schuberg Philis is designed to be thorough and equitable, implementing fair payment, benefits, and opportunities across all demographics.
It is our desire to be a company that brings together multiple nationalities, cultures, religions, genders, abilities, and talents within and across our teams. We welcome colleagues from diverse backgrounds to join Schuberg Philis and actively support diversity and inclusion in the tech industry.
