The role
Are you an inspiring leader with a passion for sports and team development? Do you want to lead a team that is daily responsible for the direction of sports broadcasts and simultaneously build a future-proof directing department?
Then NOS Sport is looking for you!
What you'll do
At the NOS, you are immediately part of one of the largest news organizations in the Netherlands. Through TV, radio, online, socials, podcasts, and the NOS app, we reach millions of people daily.
The NOS Sport editorial team consists of nearly 200 colleagues. You don't see them all every day. Much happens on location, but the editorial office in Hilversum is also buzzing, especially on weekends. Everyone contributes their own expertise to report on sporting events as well as possible. From athletics to swimming, from small to super large: we love sports.
The Directing team plays a crucial role in this. This is where sports journalism, imagery, and technology come together. From major live events to studio broadcasts and online productions: the directing team is involved everywhere. In doing so, we are moving increasingly towards streaming, digital platforms, and new forms of collaboration with external parties.
As Chief Director (the internal NOS title for this role), you lead a team of approximately 20 directors, assistant directors, editorial assistants, and autocue operators. You are responsible for the technical, creative, and organizational management of the team and contribute to the further development of the department.
You get energy from guiding, inspiring, and developing professionals. You provide direction and create the conditions in which the team can work well (together). You ensure that the basic principles regarding the NOS culture are safeguarded within the group.
You have an eye for people, ensure a pleasant and safe working environment, provide feedback, and help employees to further develop themselves.
At the same time, you look further ahead: you think along about the future of directing within a rapidly changing media landscape. You have a sharp eye for new techniques and innovation. You have a clear vision and know how to bring a team along in this.
You switch easily between roles: sometimes you are a leader, sometimes a coach or manager, and sometimes a driver of innovation.
You have close contact with the editor-in-chief, weekly editors, and other disciplines within NOS Sport. Hierarchically, you report to the Editor-in-Chief of NOS Sport and are accountable to the Deputy Editor-in-Chief Business.
In short, you:
Are the point of contact for everything regarding directing
Provide daily leadership to the directing team and guide employees in their development
Develop, together with the Editor-in-Chief, a vision for the future of sports directing for television, online, and streaming platforms, in both content and technical areas
Safeguard the quality, style, and consistency of broadcasts
Have an eye for new techniques and technological innovations
Ensure good cooperation between (senior) editors, producers, weekly editors, and other disciplines
Contribute to an open and safe working environment and ensure coherence within the group of directors and assistant directors
Ensure a clear training plan
You are the link between strategy and execution and report to the Editor-in-Chief.
Who you are
You are an inspiring leader who knows how to connect people, develop them, and get them moving. You have an affinity with live productions, media, or content creation and understand the crucial role that directing plays within a modern media production.
You are reachable and available for your employees.
What you bring:
You have demonstrable experience as a line manager in managing, coaching, and developing employees and teams.
You are able to set a clear course and bring colleagues along during changes.
You have a vision for the future of directing within the media landscape, including television, online, streaming, on demand, social media, and new forms of distribution.
You follow technological developments closely and translate new opportunities into practice.
You create a safe, inclusive, and professional working environment in which people can grow and in which you contribute to an open and professional work culture.
You have experience within media, content production, journalism, events, or a similar dynamic environment.
NOS is there for all people in the Netherlands. Therefore, we want to stand in the middle of society. Diversity in our organization is therefore of great importance. We want to give that diversity optimal space. Therefore, we strive for an inclusive culture in the organization. If you can contribute to this, in whatever way, we cordially invite you to respond.
